I planned on using windows 10, but when I researched what OS I should use, most people didn’t suggest using windows 10. Would using windows server have any advantages over windows 10? I am unfamiliar with server operating systems. Thanks!
I have two servers one Windows which I’m familiar with and one Ubuntu 18.04.2 running Docker.
The Ubuntu however runs via a script and if it broke I would probably be Googling for days.
Personally go with the OS you are comfortable with.
My Windows PMS is on W10 and it runs like a dream. As does the Linux one.
Personally having tried Windows Server I saw only down sides.
This seems to be a server you’re not really interested in being on all the time, it’s just going to sit there and serve your media. You could also look into FreeNAS, it’s super lightweight, even more so than Linux, and would allow for more system resources to be devoted to serving content via plex. It’s whatever you’re comfortable with though to be honest…
My server is running on Windows 10, but it’s also a machine I use sometimes for extra rendering power, so it’s loaded with GPU’s and such.
There is next to zero reason for you to use Windows Server 2016/2019 just to run Plex Media Server. There are advantages to using Linux over Windows for running Plex but if you are not comfortable then stick to Windows 10.
I agree with using whatever OS you are comfortable with. Different OSs have their learning curves, so use what you are familiar with to get used to what Plex can do and then see what other builds can offer. I used Windows in the beginning and branched out to FreeNAS. I am awaiting the parts for my next build and I am going to give Ubuntu a try.
