Clean Bundles causes immediate server crash

Server Version#: 1.28.2.6103 (64-bit)

Wanted to make this its own topic. Clean Bundles causes an immediate server crash every time I choose it. Otherwise no server issues. Optimize database runs fine. Empty trash is fine. All scans run quick. Looked in logs couldn’t figure it out. Logs attached.

I am seeing some permissions errors with R:\PlexTranscode\Transcode but Im still looking into the logs

Could you look in the temp folder - path should be %TEMP% for a file created around this time:
Aug 17, 2022 17:55:00

The filename would be just a series of hex characters with some dashes in between and no filename extension

We save copy of crash report into the temp folder

I think maybe this is it?

Just to experiment I uninstalled 6103 and re-installed the original 64-bit build 6018. Clean bundles for that version ran quickly and finished with no problem. Re-installed 6103 and clean bundles caused an immediate crash again. One difference I noticed in the status button at the top of plex web is for the original build it said “Analyzing Media Bundles” and the new build says “Analyzing Metadata Bundles”. Just thought I would note that.

UPDATE: With the crash mentioned above no files in the temp folder I could see, there are a few zero byte files with a .tmp extension from that time. Should “report crashes to plex” be turned on or off? I have it off right now.

OK Bear with me here this may be a little long but I narrowed down a way to specifically cause the crash with this version. It has to do with custom artwork in music playlists.

  1. I removed all music playlists. Empty Trash. Clean Bundles worked with no issue.
  2. Re-added my music playlists. Clean Bundles still works with no issue.
  3. I edited one playlist and applied a custom artwork for the poster. Clean bundles now crashes immediately.
  4. Change poster back to the default plex-generated poster. Clean bundles still crashes immediately.

There was an issue in the 32-bit server where clean bundles would wipe out all custom playlist artwork that was later listed as fixed. My guess is something is still going on in at least the 64-bit version with custom playlist artwork and clean bundles.

Hopefully that narrows it down. I have my playlists back with default artwork and clean bundles is working normally for now… As long as I don’t touch the poster art on a playlist seems to be stable.

I came here because I have the same issue since the latest beta: immediate crashes when the automatic cleaning of bundles starts. I also noticed custom artwork for music playlists disappearing (again). I am running the 32bit version though, so the issue occurs there too (I haven’t done any further trouble shooting).

I had this same issue on 1.28.2.6103 (32-bit) but when I downgraded to the public 1.28.1.6104 (32-bit) Plex no longer crashes when I clean bundles.

I’ve tracked this down, will be releasing it hotfix for it on the beta.

This should only affect you if you have playlists and those playlists also have custom uploaded artwork and also only affects certain platforms (Linux doesn’t crash here).

That seems unlikely as the server is crashing before any bundles are even processed so it’s impossible for the clean bundles to have removed these. Are you sure it’s not just from the previous bug?

By “again” I meant that it happens again in this version, after it was fixed previously. No idea if the issues are related (but from your own comment it sounds like they are  )

Edit: BTW the disappearing of some of the custom artwork happened only once, last night, shortly after installing the latest beta. It was only after booting my pc this morning that the constant crashes started, but playlist artwork remained intact then.

Just realized I posted this in a different thread figured I would update here too.

FYI – Just installed 1.28.2.6106 and clean bundles is working good now with and without custom playlist artwork. Thanks everyone for your help and quick fix on this!

The issue is still there for some of us.

Yep, still happening. Both 1.28.2.6151 and 1.29.0.6244 crash when cleaning bundles. Staying on 1.28.1.6104 for now.

I removed my playlists and it’s still crashing when bundles are cleaned on 1.29.0.6244.
