When we watch a film or TV Show, we find an actor/actress we recognise, so we go back and click their name, but it only shows what is in that current library, NOT what’s in all Plex - I have various libraries, like so many others (4k Films, 3D Films, Films, TV Shows, Recorded TV, 4k TV etc)
It would be useful if Plex showed us what we have in ALL our library or included a link to IMDB for that person, or BOTH would be perfect
My home system is made up of multiple libraries and servers, which I’m sure complicates matters but I’m always disappointed when I click on an actor and I know I have more content from them, usually it’s a TV vs movies issue.
I’d be content with the ability to quickly switch libraries on the actor screen.
For me, the ability to switch libraries would not work or really be effective as that would not automatically show the actor you are interested in?
It needs to be able to pull the actor info from the database and cross-reference it in all libraries with the database - I am sure this is not a strenuous task for the server as all the info is there already within the full database.
This could work in a similar way to how Plex currently does it for Collections. If you have a Collection which contains items from multiple libraries, the main listing is of the items in the current library but then displays sections headed “Movies in Collection Name Collection” (it’s slightly buggy as there are multiple of these all with the same heading if you have multiple libraries of the same type). Something similar could work for actors.
I’d love this too, but it would be programmatically complicated.
Plex uses different agents for what’s considered TV, and what’s considered movies. There would need to be a cross reference database maintained by Plex (or some sort of rudimentary checksum that could routinely return off results if the names weren’t precise across tables) that would cross match names for this to work successfully.
Couple that with all of the variations of agents across both Movies and TV, and you could have a potential nightmare of new issues introduced by trying to solve what seems like a simple issue.
I would love this too. I don’t think it would be that difficult. It could easily work the same way they do with collections. Those things are already in the database and it wouldn’t be difficult to cross reference them.
Bumping up this request. I can’t vote for it, as I’ve spent it on other features Plex is not ever working on, but I’d like a unified list across all library content a lot.
Thanks for the bump, I don’t think it will happen though
It’s still frustrates me to this day, we watched a film earlier and knew an actor, I have several of his films and I know he was in a TV show I have, but we have to come out of Plex and go to IMDB to find out what the TV show was
Yeah, I think that would make things very complicated very quickly. Many music artist also release under a different name than their given name. If it only works when the names are identical, then what would be the point if it only works in few, very specific instances…
It sounds neat in theory, but I’m pretty sure that tying the music library together with the movie and TV actors in a meaningful way would be a lot of work. Both for Plex and the end users.
I suspect just merging TV and movie actors is a big enough task by itself.
I understand your concerns, but I respectfully disagree. Plex is known as a media server, not just a video server. This could be a cool feature that would surpass the competition, rather than merely keeping up. Is there another app where you can search for Lady Gaga and pick from “The Fame”, “A Star Is Born” and “Lady Gaga and the Muppets Holiday Spectacular” on the same page?
Many music artist also release under a different name than their given name.
(This happens with actors too.)
All my music files are tagged and if an artist truly has multiple names, I make sure the album artist is the main name so they all show up together. You can easily do this inside Plex or outside with ID3 tags etc.

I honestly don’t think it would be too much additional work for the staff. Actor and Artist are literally just two strings in the database. Search already combines them. This proposed actor page would really just be a prefab search result with some tweaks.
For the Movie/TV purists, just exclude the music library with a toggle in the settings. Or better yet, give each library a toggle in the “Advanced” section like you have with “Visibility”, I.e. “include in home screen, people search and global search”.
Plus, what happens if this actor page is added? Do you honestly think the music fans are going to say “cool” and let it go? *They are going to want a music artist page next. Combining it from the beginning would actually end up being less work!
Anyway, it’s just a suggestion in case the staff reads this thread. I’d totally take it if it’s just actors.*
It seems this is actually a duplicate of an existing suggestion:
Therefore I consider closing this one or merging the threads. This should also help to get the full attention on a suggestion while some requests might get lost if they’re distributed across multiple threads, each only getting a subset of the available votes
