cloudSync

Just seen this on Engadget:

Looks cool.

I applaud their hard work on these last few releases, cloudSync is great addition for those who don’t have a server up all the time, but I would really like to start seeing all these other Popular voted features get implemented (parental controls, multi-user mode, etc.).

It looks to me that this is essentially PlexSync for all devices + the ability to store stuff in the cloud. I hope other cloud providers will be supported as it says in the article because as good as Dropbox is, it is run on Amazon AWS in the US only, meaning latency and bandwidth is an issue. Lack of bandwidth and high latency was apparent to me over christmas whilst I was in the Middle East, stuff would take ages to sync down from Dropbox as the US was so far away and connectivity wasn’t that great.

My thought exactly!

Im in EU and never really noticed any speed issues with Dropbox. I have 100GB paid plan + 50GB free so I use it quite often.

Granted I dont have 75Mbps FiOS i used to have in the US, but my current 16/2 is usually close to maxed out.

I think that the real promise of Cloudsync is being overlooked by the media in the articles that I’ve seen so far. I see this as a way to eliminate the bandwidth issues of streaming from a low bitrate internet connection.

The lack of upstream bandwidth when streaming outside the home is eliminated by pushing the content to the cloud first.

Just my 2 cents.

I knew there had to be a thread on this somewhere. And I second graymattar - this bypasses the miniscule upstream bandwidth issue that plagues most American households. It will be interesting to see just how this is managed - will it all be manual, will new videos automatically sync, how much space will it take up, etc.

Anxious for this. I just read a CES article about cloudsync and had no idea Plex had any presence there. Exciting news indeed.

It would be interesting if people I share my server with would be able to ask (or do it themself if i give them permissions) to first sync a movie from my library to the cloud so they can watch it later without issues with upstream bandwidth.

In terms of functionality, I think it would be great, but since that requires making a copy of the content it may run afoul of MPAA et al. I'd be very worried that Plex might be viewed as a vehicle for piracy, which is the last thing anyone wants to see.

The movie would still be streamed to my friends device the same way as it happens now with myPlex. Only difference would be it would come from my cloud space instead of from my server.

Am I not allowed to put a copy of the content I bought in the cloud, lets say for backup reasons... ?

Ah, I thought you meant it would sync to *their* Dropbox account, which would be a copy. You mean allow your friends to sync it to your own Dropbox account - that makes a lot more sense.

(I've been sick for 3-4 weeks, my brain melted away long ago.)

No problem! Get better soon!

I am at CES, but I am not able to find any Plex booth, any ideer where I can find the Plex team?

I agree, I also have good connectivity to Dropbox, however we're in Europe which has pretty good connectivity to the US. What I was more thinking of was people that live in say the Middle East, Asia or Africa as bandwidth and latency to the US is much more of an issue. If for example they could use a cloud provider that has servers closer to the user's location it would speed up for them. It does say in the article that other cloud providers may be supported. Most of that point would be moot if Dropbox used Amazon AWS at all their locations and there are quite a few! ==> http://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/globalinfrastructure/regional-product-services/

+1

Some popular voted features are there for almost 6 months. I would like to see them available before cloudsync-like features.

To be fair, some of those requests (like multi-user or parental modes) would require quite a bit of architectural change, whereas PlexSync and CloudSync are incremental builds on top of existing infrastructure. There's a lot of "bang for the buck" in terms of developer time versus delivery of a new feature.

That said, I agree that the "bug voting/feature requesting" aspect of PlexPass really has fallen flat and is very disappointing. We gave all of the same feedback before for free. At least some indication that PlexPass-requested features had been added to the roadmap is in order. And if they haven't, then just shut down this subforum, as it serves no purpose that the non-PlexPass ones don't already serve.
