Collections: Auto-Load / Auto-Config

For those that may have numerous movies (or TV Shows) that are part of a collection, is there a way to “auto-generate” the “Collections” tag?

eg: instead of going to each (and every) movie or TV show that is part of a collection, the ability to provide an XML/CSV/??? formatted file that basically says: “where title = and year = , add collection(s) = , , …”

This would be extremely helpful under various circumstances:

  • A fresh install, wanting the ability to quickly set one (or more) collection tags to numerous media files
  • An OS upgrade (via format drive and fresh install) and would like to make use of latest metadata (eg: don’t use prior backup and re-pull available metadata)
  • Existing collection where setting a large list of collections would be too cumbersome via search/find and tagging each item
  • (etc.)

Would think this to be a nice additional feature that would see excellent use. As various movies or TV Shows (some examples: Star Trek, Star Wars, James Bond, Indiana Jones, …) the titles don’t enable searching on “James Bond” or “Star Wars” or “Indiana Jones” and obtaining all the related results. Thus “Collections” seems to be the most efficient means to locate all related items - at least from a user perspective. If there’s a better means - certainly amicable to hearing how others have addressed this need. Arguably, the better route would be keywords/Series/Collection information in the media file itself (therefore persisting across any application and any application being able to make use of it - but doesn’t appear that it’s part of the specification? - or I’m not seeing that?)
