Collections counted as movies

I’ve noticed that since the collections feature was added, the count of movies in my library has increased substantially - by about 320 in just the last few weeks. It looks like each collection is being counted as though it were another movie. Collections shouldn’t increase the movie count - they are just a container for movies and this abnormally inflates the apparent library size.

I also noticed that in the advanced filter view, collections are included if they match the filter criteria, even if the movies they contain do not, and there is no option to prevent this. I can imagine there are situations where users might want to include collections in their filtered results, but there are others where they would not. If they are to be included, then there should at least be an option to filter them out.

The number you see is not a count of movies, it’s the count of items on the page. This changes as you change views, filters, etc.

A collection is treated as a regular media item, so you can search/sort/filter for them. No way to exclude them currently.

I find that the number of files displayed decreases as you add collections, not increases. For example my Movies Plus library displays 1062 files without any collections and with some collections added, it displays 786.

Do you possibly have an ‘Optimised’ or ‘Sync’ or ‘Recorded TV’ files folder in your library path that is being included in your library perhaps?

That might explain the increase in the number of files.

Another possibility, is duplicate files that are no longer grouped together. Use the ‘Duplicates’ filter to check.

If your library is set to “Show collection and their items” then your item count will increase as you add collections.
If your library is set to “Hide items in collections” then your item count will decrease as you add collections.
If your library is set to “Disabled” then your item count will not change as you add collections.

I use “Disabled” and then use the collection view when I want to browse by collections. The other two viewing methods have, for me, unwanted side effects.

I can see where the setting of whether to show or hide movies in collections would determine the # of items.

I see. That makes sense, but if collections and movies are listed and counted together in the filter view (based on the “show/hide collection” setting) it would be helpful to have a filter option to change this behavior, regardless of the “show/hide collection” setting. For example, a simple filter option for “is/is not a collection” would make it easy to filter out movies or collections ad-hoc as desired. Is this a feature request that would be useful to others?

Collections are only shown when viewed by the title. Change to anything else and collections go away.

This is no longer true (in Plex Web). Now, when viewing by anything but Title, Plex shows movies and collections. Only when viewing By Title does Plex honor the “Hide items which are in collections” setting.

Yup, you are correct. Things have changed since UNO. I will report this to the team.
