Collections Feature Enhancement

I love the feature, but a few things I think would make “Collections” better:

BE ABLE TO SHARE COLLECTIONS ACROSS LIBRARIES: For example, I have two libraries for my movies: “Movies” and “3D Movies” and a separate library for TV shows. I created a “collection” called “MCU” for all my Marvel Superhero stuff. In most cases I have the same movie ripped into both formats for those who prefer no 3D…also TV shows like “Agents of Shield” is part of the MCU, but it’s in different library called “TV Shows”. The problem here is that because these different types of media are in their own libraries, I can’t add them into the same collection. The way it works now I can’t add the 2D and 3D versions of the same movie or my TV shows into the same collection…:frowning:

CUSTOM SORTING: using the same MCU example, you can sort by release date, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the chronological order of the films. This is a lesser priority in my mind than the above suggestion, but it would still be nice. Right now you can edit the sort order of a movie of course, but it only applies to that library. It would be cool to have a sort order that only applies to that collection. Maybe an “Edit” screen for the collection itself that would allow you to drag and drop them into whatever order you wanted or even add the capability of reordering right from the collection screen itself via drag and drop JUST for within that collection.

MENU FOR COLLECTIONS: in desktop mode there are menus on the left for “Manage”, “Libraries” and “Online Content”. How about one for “Collections”? That could be added to the TV view in the app as well as a “Library” or similar. Maybe even a single item with a fly out menu for the actual collections?

There was something else I thought of two but now I can’t recall. If I remember I’ll add it to this thread.

Thanks!

I would further suggest that the goal should be to make Collections as feature comparable to Playlists because that’s what I see it replacing.

  1. custom sorting (already mentioned above)
  2. ability to add to collection with a tool bar button
  3. sub menu under the category (similar to above)

Yes, you can.
Just give their Collections the exact same name. It will be later collected across library boundaries.
You can combine movies, tv shows and artists or albums all into the same collection:

There is already a ‘collections’ view mode in tv show and movie libraries
(Don’t forget to use the ‘hosted’ web app at this time)

What’s with the collection folder with 0 Movies in it? How do we make these go away? There’s no logic to having an empty collection folder.

This doesn’t really belong into this feature request:

I would like to see the ability to hide videos already in a collection. So I don’t see “Batman Collection” and then Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman and Robin right after. If they’re in the collection let them be hid, if they’re not in a collection show them.

I would LOVE to see Plex add the ability to subscribe to user created collections so I don’t have to do all the work myself. Someone already added all the Marvel movies to a collection? Yes, subscribe! I want that too!
Plex could even limit it’s display of user created collections to include only collections that contain movies that are in my library.

I’d like to be able to add individual TV Episodes to a Collection.

Agreed. It would be helpful for flagging “Holiday” episodes or specials. Or I could flag the Family Guy Star Wars episodes so they show up in a Star Wars collection.

Adding individual audio tracks to a collection also could have use, but is a much lower priority in my mind.

I’d also like to see the Collections drop down selection list sorted by “Sort Title”, so all the ones that start with “The” aren’t grouped together. I also changed the Title of a Collection, but it didn’t update in the selection list. I would expect it to sort by Sort Title and display the Title. Is there a way to update the title on the list without recreating a new one?

Minor bug: I have a managed user for my kids that doesn’t display movies over a certain rating. If everything in a collection is excluded, the collection doesn’t display, as expected. However, if only part is excluded, the “# of movies” counts the excluded items too, although they don’t actually appear when the collection is opened.

Finally, a collection by collection option to hide the movies would be nice. Options could be “server default, hide individual items from library, show individual items in library”. As long as at least one collection has it set as “hide”, the individual items would not show up in the library.

Overall the collection feature is amazing! It practically cut my displayed library size in half.

OK, I’m still parsing through the rest, but I a movie in a library for 3D movies and a library for 2D. In many cases I have both versions on my server. If you look at this you’ll see that the one by itself is the 3D version even though they have the exact same collection name.

Am I missing something? Why is there a listing for “STAR WARS COLLECTION” and a separate one for “MOVIES IN STAR WARS COLLECTION”? They are all in the SAME collection.

Collections with the same name are linked - they aren’t one big collection. So, your linked collection is shown at the bottom.

Open collection “A”, and at the bottom of collection “A” you will see linked collection “B”.

This would be the best thing ever. I have a collection for things like “Heist Movies” which I want to still see all the individual contents, but I also have a “Harry Potter” that… yeah you can collapse that.

OK…that’s not exactly what I was asking for. I am looking for it to be ONE collection. Not two collections that are linked because you used the same name.

Even when you do a search from the home page it lists TWO collections, one for each library. If one wants a collection shouldn’t it span ALL content with that collection tag? If I wanted a collection for 2D movies called “MCU” and a different collection for 3D versions of the same movies I’d create a different collection. I want it ALL to be in one collection for all the MCU movies.

I need to maintain separate libraries for 2D and 3D because I share the 2D library with guest users and I don’t want them to see the 3D movies that they can’t play.

I know that Plex is a perpetual work in progress, but I wanted to clarify what I was asking for.

Ah hah, I had been looking in server settings not library, thank you!

It would be good if it included the collection summary as well.

Early 2021 clean-up: implemented (cross-library collections, specific order inside collection), duplicate (collection entry in main menu)
