Plex cannot transcode HDR material at all, it results in the color issues you describe.
Thank you for the quick answer. That is very disappointing - I bought the new nas specifically for 4k transcoding. Most of the content is hdr - that sucks
The buzzword you are looking for is “tonemapping”. It means mapping the color scheme of HDR (BT2020?) to the one of of SDR (BT709?).
Not to derail, but aside from the lacking tonemapping, how does it perform with 4K transcoding? Can it handle more than one stream? Ive been eying the same nas myself
I am still in the process of copying media over to the new ds1019+ - will let you know once its done tomorrow. I got 6 parallel 1080p streams transcoding to 720p this afternoon with the cpu at 60% - have to try 4k tomorrow.
Thanks! Would love to know!
I just tried it with a 4K Version of the Avengers and I got two streams running without issues. (see screenshot).
(just realized that the player content is not visible in the screenshot. After about 5 Minutes of play I got a short reload (spinning orange circle) in one window and then shortly after in the other. The whole system is still doing parity checks of all the disks in the background, so I’ll redo the test once that’s done. Thanks man! Two streams will probably be enough for me!
I tested it again today after the parity checks completed. I could get two 4k streams running/transcoding to 1080p at the same time. As soon as I started the 3rd one the streams began to pause / show the orange rotating circle pretty often. I’d say 3 streams is not possible.
Allright, thanks for verifying.
Looking into moving from a big, loud 4U unit to a NAS and SHR along with decent transcoding performance may be the way to go
