This is really a query about info on Plex published Support Articles:
Where can I go to see a list of compatible TV devices? The list here indicates Android TV and Smart TV devices, but does not clarify the differences.
List here is brief and generic: Sony is mentioned here. But when I click through to see compatibility, this links to a list that does not match the previous: Sony is not mentioned here.
Does this info need a bit of a coordinated update?
Android TV refers to devices that run based on an Android TV platform⦠that includes TV sets (e.g. Sonyās TVs with Android TV) but also some streaming boxes (among others the Nvidia SHIELD).
Amazonās Fire TV series is also build on an Amazon platform (while deviating in some ways, e.g. providing its own app store).
Smart TV devices is referring to the supported TV brands with their own smart tv platform (e.g. Samsungās Tizen or LGās WebOS).
You might be right that the smart tv modal needs an overhaul. From what I remember, Sony used to offer a non-Android smart tv platform based on Opera (now āVewdā). I believe thatās either no longer supported or ceased to exist in total (not 100% sure).
Personally Iād try not to purchase a TV solely by its capability to run Plex. You might be better off buying a decent TV that meets your requirements and spend some $/ā¬/⦠on a good streaming box (e.g. Nvidia Shield, Apple TV, some Rokuā¦). Those usually provide better compatibility and you donāt end up on an outdated OS/platform after a year or so.
Itās hard, but not impossible, to find a Dumb TV, but the smartest Smart one youāll find is plenty dumb and itās hardware already compromised.
If one must buy a Smart TV, buy it for itās excellent image quality and feature set - then buy a Capable Device to plug into it.
A FireTV is NOT a capable device (the device is, but the Plex App is a disaster area). Anything else would be preferable. I just bought a 4K Stick. I bought it ('cause it was cheap enough) for Amazon content - and to see if Plex can ever develop an app for it⦠curiosity, more than anything and true to form - the Plex App either crashes or locks up regularly - so not much ever changes in the FireTV Plexiverse.
The 4k FireTV Stick (Refurb - $37) and the Many Roku Ultras (Refurbs - about $65) all control the TV Volume/Power and all have Netflix/Prime/Whatever - so once you get the HDMI port engaged - itās one remote.
You will need the TV Remote at some point, for something shocking, like watching āRegularā TV, but when you get yourself ādug intoā The Plexiverse/Streaming Services - you donāt have to go anywhere and youāre dealing with one remote.
Avoid the FireTV ecosystem - unless you just canāt help yourself, but make sure you have a Roku Ultra - or anything else as backup - 'cause ur gonna need it.
The Shield is most likely the strongest āDeviceā as it will almost Direct Play anything you throw at it - itās also $200 - and make sure you buy the right one 'cause some of them arenāt worth a hoot. A Shield will never darken my door, but one of the many Shield Fans should be along shortly to nail me to a Dogwood Cross while they sell you the right Shield.
They canāt sell me one - thatās why Iām hanginā out up here with Spartacus and the boys on Beef Jerky Hill - watching our Roku Ultras (the best Plex App - but who needs that, right?).
Agreed. The Fire TV 4k is a powerful device, rvery other app you throw at it will stream like butter, both sound and video quality are top. Itās Plex that canāt seem to get it right.
Sad that Plex draws people to them with false promises on app performance, I bought 6 of them and a plex pass, extremely excited to get everything set-up. Well I got my end set up (it was hard work for me), and Plex doesnāt even bother responding.
The thing I find most amazing is the repeated claims of āRoku Ultras the best Plex App.ā
Personally i feel that needs someone to have used all similar high end clientsā¦
Yep client cost will always come into it.
Its pretty skewed though to compare a Roku Ultra refurb at $65 whilst apparently suggesting that a Shield will cost $200. I mean its not like the Shield or ATV 4K have refurbs.
But I only own all three so what do I know?
I have Roku Ultras and FireTVs
The Roku is the flagship UNO App Design - what everything else is aspiring to be and the FireTV is Android - the biggest hunk of junk Iāve ever used in my life.
I donāt need to see a Shield to KNOW whatās running on it.
Iām looking at the same thing - and in a few weeks/months Iāll even get a look at 8.3 - as soon as Amazon decides Plex Users have waited long enough.
Amazon doesnāt have any Shield Refurbs āright nowā, but they may⦠the savvy shopper is always checking these things before purchase⦠thatās how I got 3 Roku Ultras for about $65 each.
Amazon doesnāt even Sell Apple Products.
You have to stand in line for 8 weeks and spend $10,000 - like every other piece of half-eaten fruit⦠(that was a joke) Itās very likely youāll never see a Apple Refurb anywhere - I really donāt know.
