Connection shows 'Remote' on LAN

Server Version#: 1.19.3.2852
Player Version#: Desktop 4.30.2 (local) or 4.34.3 (app.plex.tv)

I’m hoping someone on here will be able to help me out with understanding this.

So I run a small personal webserver with a few services, including Plex. The DNS lookup for said server will return it’s local address when within my home network. If Plex is connecting via the URL, does it report the connection type as ‘Remote’ on desktop because it isn’t looking at the actual IP address it’s connecting to? This happens if I use app.plex.tv or my hostname. If I connect using the local address and not the hostname, it reports as ‘Nearby’.

Strangely, app.plex.tv on my Android phone reports the server as being ‘Nearby’, as does using the hostname.

Further details:

  • Server is running Nginx and Plex is accessible via https://xxxx/plex, but that simply redirects to https://xxxx:32400.
  • Docker container has network in host mode and port 32400 is bound to the host’s 32400.
  • Port 32400 is forwarded on my router.
  • Port 32400 is open on the server firewall.
  • plex.direct is allowed to perform DNS Rebinds on router (running openwrt).
  • I have told Plex about the https://xxxx/plex URL.
  • I am using my SSL certificate for my domain name in Plex.
