Control Hue lights from Plex

I have spent the better part of the last 4 days trying to find a way to do a (i think) very simple thing:
When i start a movie/TV show the lights in my living room go either dimmed or off.
When i pause they dim (if they’re off) and when i stop the video the lights go back on.

This adds so much to the watching experience but it seems like all the projects that exist on this are completely dead and no longer maintained. It’s such a shame and if i was able to write code myself i would put something out there that would be able to do this.

But what really surprises me is that Plex can’t add this function or provide a plugin to do this. Or even fork the existing HelloHue.bundle and update it to work with the plugins system instead of the no longer existing channels system.

It’s really a shame that this is missing from Plex which i am in general very happy with.

you can use a webhook to accomplish this if you want.

I will say this is not for the non technical folks at all.

I know there are many other ways to accomplish this. Also by using home automation such as hass and domoticz or something i am sure.

But that is not the solution i am looking for. For Kodi there was a very simple script “Kodi hue script” after installing this it just works.

I miss this simplicity in plex. I am not planning to spend another couple of hours to try to get it working with webhooks apart from the fact that i doubt i have the technical knowhow to get this working.

I will simply cancel my plex pass and consider other options. Since the DVR function is completely messed up as well i honestly don’t see any value in the plex pass anymore

I hear what you are saying, but from an industry perspective there are all sorts of smart devices such as wemo, wink, hue, samsung the list goes on and on.

By using an industry standard webhook Plex can provide its end users the ability to automate any smart device not just lights but also blinds or any other smart automated device that has a standard API.

Smart devices are really the bleeding edge these days and I expect over time these automation systems will get simpler but for now it requires an advanced/technical user to get working.

Plex is for video, not for home automation. There’s a lot of things that can read the state from plex and can control other things (home assistant, openhab). These are much more flexible and are able to deal with all the differing technologies for controlling physical things (wifi, zigbee, zwave).

Leave plex to what it does well.

Hello

I stumbled upon this after I could no longer get the hellohue plugn to work - the option to click the plugin tile and open up the menu to connect the hue bridge wouldn’t work after updating plex. I found that if I uninstalled, and reinstalled an older veriosn of plex, I could connect the bridge then reinstall latest version of plex and it’s still working. Bit of a faff but not too much trouble as I’m running on a WD NAS. All the libtaries and settings etc seem to be retained.

If you have smartthings. This Smartthings app uses webhook to control lights either through smarthings and Phillips Hue, or just bulbs and switches connected directly to Smartthings. Worth the Plex pass subscription.

@dylanweb Thanks!

never heard of it so downloaded the app followed the instructions. But then found out i need some kind of hub? Unfortunately the hub is not sold in my country (the Netherlands) and it would be my 3rd “smart home” hub in my cupboard lol. I need another 19" shelf just for all the hubs :stuck_out_tongue:

It is sold on Amazon so i might actually just get one since it’s cyber-monday weekend and they’re going for 77 euro
