Control where in file thumbnail preview is taken from - currently REALLY bad if watching sports

I went to watch a sports game that I had downloaded on my plex media server and was extremely disappointed to find that the thumbnail image was taken from the 69th minute of the game with the score front and center! I’m not sure how the default time range is selected, but would be useful if by default this was taken from the first few minutes of the file, rather than the very end.

This has been asked many many times over the last several years but Plex has been effectively silent and apparently unconcerned about the issue.

Either Plex does not care or they think what they have is good enough. Either way I think they do not consider it important enough to warrant any changes. It is very hard to predict what the Plex pundits consider important but allowing users to control the depth into a file where thumbnails come from is obviously VERY low on their list.

It seems to be a very easy change but I guess there could be side effects and I do not expect it ever to be a user selectable or editable option because Plex is one of the most anti-user choice companies I have ever seen. They say virtually every time a user choice is ask for or suggested that it would over-complicate the code and make it hard to maintain.

I do not buy that excuse. I think Plex want everybody to use Plex in exactly the same way.

Here are two work arounds for the often requested, always ignored, feature request above:

Neither is without varying degrees of painful itch and swelling, but the general advice is to use the one that causes the least amount of irritation and get used to it - I do not smell any changes in the air.
