Conversion failed. transcoder crashed or failed to start up

I’m currently having trouble with subtitles.
Removing the RSA folder on the workstation had no affect. I did not try on the server.
I don’t want to delete my library unless someone can say definitively it will solve the problem.
I’m on the current Plex Pass release and am not terribly enthusiastic about downgrading.
My bet is that opensubtitles.org has done something to break/disable remote fetching of subtitles since you can manually download the subs and drop them in the folder to load them locally.

Deleting the libraries and re-creating them solved my problem…

For the moment, this issue only affects my playback and syncing to my iOS devices (particularly my ipad). My consoles/STBs still playback fine.

Reinstalling server software/repairing server software did not solve the problem (currently running 1.5.3.3580)
Changing the crypto file did not solve the problem.
Analyzing the library did not solve my problem.

I really, really do NOT want to delete the library and re-create it which may, or may not fix it. That’s tons of work for “maybe”. Any reason why there’s no dev post on an issue that clearly affects a good number of people?

In the middle of a movie, my system running PMS froze. I crashed it out and rebooted the system.
Then I got this message.
Did not want to delete and recreate the lib.
Looking through settings for a log file location I came accross C:\Users<USERNAME>\AppData\Local.
Started browsing there and looked into Plex Media Server\Cache\Transcode.
Saw that the Sessions folder was corrupt(unreadable)
Stopped PMS. Renamed corrupt Sessions folder.
Started PMS, saw that a clean Sessions folder was created.
Error message gone, everything playing normal again.
Cheers…

I just had this issue. It was bad subtitles for me. Deleted them and everything was playing fine again

Deleting libraries isn’t solution. Maybe for somebody but still yet not confirmed that this would solve your problem with trancoding crashes.

I was upgraded my plex to plexmediaserver-1.7.5.4035-313f93718.x86_64 version (on Centos server) and transoding started to crash every time I started to watch anything from my libraries. It’s impossible that the are all corrupted.

What @cengizyeker wrote make sense for transcoding problems.

Maybe year ago I had exactly the same problem. I deleted dozen times all libraries but without success. Than I create Sessions file on other partition and create simlink.

Path to Sessions on my linux server —> /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Cache/Transcode/

And its worked perfectly till yesterday. My Solution:

I stopped plex server;
Unlink simlink;
Delete Session file (if nothing is there, dont worry, it will create as soon as you start to watch something);
Start plex server
Play some video;
Thats it.

I’m still having this problem… after months and months. Prepping for a few flights to China and I’d really like to get some resolutions. I’m running on Windows.

Deleting and recreating libraries does not fix the problem.

Jova, your solution might be right but I’m running on Windows. What would I do in that case? I went into appdata/local to try and find similar issues. I deleted what few session directories I found but it hasn’t solved the problem. Could you walk through the unlink simlink solution?

Cengi, I tried your solution, same effect (no change in playback was terminated by the server/conversion crashed or failed to start up) error.

@csvensson

Did you find a path “Plex Media Server\Cache\Transcode” in your appdata directories?
What do you have in Transcode folder? If there is a Sessions file, could you delete it? If yes, what happens when you try to play somethnig on your iOS devices?

Symlink solution was walktrough from my problem with transcoding in the past. Symlink -> symbolic link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbolic_link

My root/main partition was too small, so I put symbolic link to Sessions file to another partition with lot more space and that solved my problem, but now my Sessions file was corrupted and solution was to delete Sessions file.

Do you have any logs from your transcoding errors?

I also just started to have this problem. It does not crash on every file though.

On windows, crashes every time for me. Deleting libraries is not an option. I’ve rolled back to 1.5.X and all is good there.

I was having the same issue with the transcoding failing. Over the course of a 43 minute TV show I went from a failure every 2 minutes at the start to a failure every 5 seconds in the last 5 minutes of the show.

I stumbled onto this post looking for a solution and after trying several other suggestions turning off the subtitles for this show fixed the issue.

just adding in my “Me to”

I’ve tried the Sessions Folder to no avail.
I’ll try rolling back the last upgrade later tonight.

My biggest problem is that I only get the error occasionally when trying to use on my new apple TV. And only on mkv files.

Hi, I had this problem with one movie only. I had external Subtitles in the folder and when I changed it to another subtitle (the one downloaded by the Plex opensubtitles addon) it worked right away.

Just incase this might help anyone. Good Luck!

Yeah, definitely the “.idx” subtitle was giving the transcoding error, change the subtitles to check if the file transcodes, and delete the one causing the error. I keep forgetting those transcoding errors, if not the video, its the audio, if not, check subtitles.

That one solved my problem. In my case it was .flv files, not .mkv, that were the problem.

On OSX the folder was in /Users//Library/Caches/PlexMediaServer

I just stopped my Plex server, deleted the Transcode folder, restarted, and my next attempt the file transcoded perfectly.

Hey Guys, just got the same issue yesterday: many of my videos, that played fine a few days ago, can’t be played any longer due to “The transcoder crashed or failed to start up.”
I’m using Plex Server 1.7.5.4035-313f93718 for Ubuntu 16.04.
Tried to create a new Library with the same set of files (same directory) - failed.
Deleted objects items under Cache directories (./Plug-in Support/Caches and ./Cache), restarted Plex Server - didn’t help either.
I haven’t updated Plex Server for a month or so, there were no issues at least a week ago, but now it’s a total nightmare - I have to use ffmpeg to recode videos to mpeg4…
Seems my last option is to delete the Library (some meta files will be deleted also, right?), then create again, which is not an option for me as I have many-many fields filled manually (old movies from 1950’s)

Guys at Plex.tv, do you see our pain? Do you think it’s OK when your plex-passed customers experience issues on the topic for almost a year and you don’t take actions?

I’ve been reporting DB issues for years on every install of Plex I have ever had without any resolution. I frequently have to remove a library and readd it to get it to “work” properly. And its not my hardware - I’ve seen this on several PCs. Its a long standing Plex issues which is either elusive or ignored.

Now I’m suffering this transcoding error too.

  1. Deleted cached. Didn’t help.
  2. Deleted and readded library, didn’t help.

The files having issues I have watched in the past fine using Plex. The only changes since then are Plex upgrades. Im pretty sure if I went down to older versions like others have mentioned it would fix it.

As a temp fix, I have Plex (same exact version) on my dev PC. I added a library to it using the same exact files shared over a network share and they play fine. So its something with the Plex install on my main server. The relevant part of the log is below:
