Converting / Optimizing

New user, first post after a bit of searching.

I have some questions (and feedback) about “optimizing”. Here’s what I would LIKE to happen…

  1. . I’d like everything I add to be optimized.

  2. . I’d like the client to automatically use the optimized version.

  3. . I’d like the original to automatically be deleted.

It seems to me that this all very manual right now and I don’t understand exactly why?

Thanks in advance and sorry if I missed something obvious or posted in the wrong place?

Unfortunately, that would be a no to all 3 of those items. The Media Optimize feature is not meant to replace your files in this manner. It is designed to make a more compatible version that can be used on demand but still keeping and using the original by default.

For what you want, it might be easier to create a script that watches for new files you add to a specific folder, performs the conversion, deletes the original, then moves the new version to the appropriate Plex folder.

Thanks for replying… but what am I not understanding? Why WOULDN’T I want an “optimized” version over the original?

As for your script idea, I guess I could do something like that but I don’t exactly know what optimization needs to happen. I assume it changes it to the best format for the Plex player (whatever that is)… does it do anything else? It does beg the question why aren’t all torrents already optimized? Why would someone create a less than optimal version?

Hey, i’m new to plex also… But when they talk about optimising, it means creating other formats of the video that can be played directly on other clients (without transcoding on the fly)… So this will give the ‘optimal’ experience for one type of client device, but wont necessarily be the ‘best’ copy of the video as it will likely be a smaller resolution, using a different compression/encoding and container to the original.

I’m not entirely sure what they do when you optimise a video as I haven’t done it yet, but it might even create multiple copies to create optimal copies for multiple devices (i.e. 1 for ipads, 1 for mobile, 1 for remote web etc…)

Cheers
Jason

There are different reasons a person may want to create an optimized version and not necessarily as a replacement for the original. Also, Plex does not like to touch a user’s original files, just to prevent potential issues of “Plex deleted my file”. If you want to replace your originals, you’ll need to find a way to do it outside of Plex.
