Cortana Speech Assistant integration

Hi all,
maybe you’ve noticed that Windows 10 is right before our doors and with that, Cortana.
This fancy little assistant might be somewhat that could be useful

You know, you sit on you couch and you just sey: “Hey Cortana, can you please play THOR for me” and it just would start to play it, or pause it, or… you know where this is going to =)

Leave a rating and a comment, what do you think about an integration in your Plex Home Theater?

I posted this elsewhere looking for a laugh, but this thread seems even more appropriate:

Looking forward to walking into my theater and saying… “Hey Cortana, Let’s watch a movie”
Boom… Plex loads up…
Then Cortana says, “Would you like it on the Desktop or the Projector Screen?”
And I say, “Throw it on the big screen this time.”
Then Cortana asks, “Did you have a film in mind, or shall I pick one for you?”
And I reply, “You go ahead and pick something for me.”
So Cortana replies, “Well, you’ve been watching a lot of porn lately… would you like to try something different?”
That’s when my wife smacks me, and tosses the remote through the screen…

OK… so maybe not.

[The above scenario was presented purely as a satirical event for entertainment purposes only - and does not reflect upon my personal viewing preferences. Nor is it intended to portray my wife as anything but a beautiful, calm and rational woman. :)) ]

Haha, thank you, you made my day =D

But seriously, it would be awesome if this would work, also this pron kind of thing except the pron

Personally I find voice search/control systems worthless but others clearly feel differently. I cannot conceive even one situation where I would have any desire to use a voice system.

I had the opportunity to test Amazon’s “Echo” for free and to keep the device after testing and, as much as I like gadgets, I turned it down. It just seems to me that having a useless, for me, device is not worth any of my time.

But, as I said, my choice is not best for everyone but if it can be implemented fairly easily and turned off for those of us that don’t want it then I would find no real reason to object. However if Plex would have to spend any significant resources to implement then I would object. But my objections are not particularly powerful in having an effect on Plex’s, or most any other company’s, decisions as far as product development goes and the allocation of resources.

Whenever I say anything in my home my dog believes I am talking to him and trying to control my electronics via voice would confuse him to no end and he gets confused easily enough now. (Think Odie)

@Plexhilarated That reminded me of this I found a few years ago:

! And then the fight started
!
! When I got home last night, my wife demanded that I take her someplace expensive… So, I took her to a gas station…
!
! And then the fight started…
!
! My wife and I are watching “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” while we were in bed. I turned to her and said, “Do you want to have sex?” “No,” she answered. I then said, “Is that your final answer?” She didn’t even look at me this time, simply saying, “Yes.” So I said, “Then I’d like to phone a friend.”
!
! And then the fight started…
!
! After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for Social Security. The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver’s license to verify my age. I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home. I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to go home and come back later. The woman said, “Unbutton your shirt”. So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair.
!
! She said, “That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me”. And she processed my Social Security application. When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office. She said, “You should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten Disability, too”.
!
! And then the fight started…
!
! Saturday morning I got up early, quietly dressed, made my lunch, grabbed the dog, and slipped quietly into the garage. I hooked up the boat up to the truck, and proceeded to back out into a torrential downpour. The wind was blowing 50 mph, so I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad all day. I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. I cuddled up to my wife’s back, now with a different anticipation, and whispered, “The weather out there is terrible.”
!
! My loving wife of 10 years replied, “Can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that?”
!
! And then the fight started …
!
! My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion, and I kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby table. My wife asked, “Do you know her?”
!
! “Yes,” I sighed, “She’s my old girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear she hasn’t been sober since.”
!
! “My God!” says my wife, “Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?”
!
! And then the fight started…
!
! I rear-ended a car this morning. So, there we were alongside the road and slowly the other driver got out of his car. You know how sometimes you just get so stressed and little things just seem funny? Yeah, well I couldn’t believe it… He was a DWARF!!!
!
! He stormed over to my car, looked up at me, and shouted, “I AM NOT HAPPY!!!”
!
! So, I looked down at him and said, “Well, then which one are you?”
!
! And then the fight started…
!
! I took my wife to a restaurant. The waiter, for some reason, took my order first. “I’ll have the strip steak, medium rare, please.” He said, “Aren’t you worried about the mad cow?”
!
! “Nah, she can order for herself.”
!
! And then the fight started…
!
! A woman is standing nude, looking in the bedroom mirror. She is not happy with what she sees and says to her husband, “I feel horrible; I look old, fat and ugly. I really need you to pay me a compliment.”
!
! The husband replies, “Your eyesight’s darn near perfect.”
!
! And then the fight started…

At some point I agree with you, for example the voice assistant in Android.
It can just start a search, or open an app, that it is, very disappointing.

The key that is missing is the deep integration that would make everything awesome.
I often drive in my car around and get a message, now I want to replay without take my hands of the wheel.
Something like, OK Google, open my whatsapp chat with Barbara and reply… bla bla bla.

That are the thing that make a voice assistant valuable, helpful and useful, in my opinion.

So, in some way I agree with you,
deeply integrated voice assistant: yes
everything else: no

Hmmm, I thought voting also pushes post up… don’t seems so.
Please also leave a comment to keep this request up

I’d use it! But does Cortana have those APIs exposed yet?

Sure, here are two links where you can read a little bit about the integration and usage:
msdn.microsoft.com

code.msdn.microsoft.com

Edit: I think the second link isn’t related to Cortana

Like the idea but wouldn’t this be restricted to a subset of clients (those that are running on Windows).

Yes, just like the current Android application Google Now integration only works on, well, the Android application.

That’s true, it only runs on it own eco system, just like Siri or what ever Google is calling it’s Voice Assistant =D

No, it also works on Windows Phone, and Cortana is coming to Android and ios too. And windows 10 is off to great start so far, and Windows still is the most popular desktop OS, so I think Cortana is going to be fairly widely available.

That’s right but I don’t think that Apple will allow Cortana to be that much integrated in IOS, so we can get a use out of it. Android maybe work.

I think it will be better if you stick to the speech assistant thats related to its own eco system, apple = siri, andoid = (i still don’t know its name ^^) and microsoft = cortana.

And then there are still the other clients of plex… TVs, Roku etc.
Its a hard decision where you want to start, it would be nice to get a word of a dev here
