Cost Overrun's

This Message is to PLEX.

The simple matter that Plex has made the product User Unfriendly by placing their (your) content before my own ticks me off.

By adding TV, Ads, Rentals, and so on to push your agenda, it has made Plex much less desire-able.

You have been selling our use data to third parties.

Now you want to increase the lifetime subscription to astronomically prices.

Plex, you have been ripping us off at the core and it must stop.

When I login to my server(s), you do not need to know what I am watching, because I don’t want ads forced on me. I only want to see the content I placed on MY SERVERS, NOT YOURS!

Subscriptions are not happening - EVER. So stop pushing in that direction.

OKOK, You say so how do I make money? You make money by selling your products core software, then when you update it, you ask for people to update at a cost. Let us, THE PEOPLE decide whether or not your products are worth the upgrade, then you adjust to what THE PEOPLE want, not what PLEX wants.

You need to cut the Crap, because there are too many other options on the table, and going the way of Adobe will just kill your product. We used to love Plex before all the changes. Just like Disney, you’re evolving in the direction where the PIXIE DUST has disappeared.

We want a basic product that is feature enriched, but without the bloat, selling of user data, Ads and so on. Get your Head Out Of Your Butt.

Hey look here is an idea. My entire music collection is on my NAS. I’d like to be able to access my music in my car using Tesla, Android Auto or iplay. Looks like a opportunity for profit if you cut the middleman crap out. I want to access it directly without going through your paywall servers. I’d buy it one time and then update it for another price if the features are good. Otherwise, Plex is dying. NoOne will pay you high fees anymore. That is NoOne with any good sense.

We have spoken!

you can switched these off.

Not for you and not for me, maybe. However I am led to believe that plenty of people are.

you do and I do - but we are no longer their core customers.

well, that’s just unnecessary.

well you spoke; but please don’t assume you are speaking for me.

Whilst I also only want local content, I recognise Plex isn’t obliged to stick with what they did well just for me. In this regard I now also run Emby and will flick that switch quite soon, I’m sure.

There’s really no debating that the product has become too expensive, and that the price is much more than what it to be. I think $75 a year for a subscription or $250 for a lifetime pass is simply too much money for what it is, especially when you consider that much of the content in Plex is already monetized in some other way. The remote viewing would be an okay deal if they didn’t turn off hardware transcoding.

Been running Plex lifetime for years! All those ads and purchasing movies can be SHUT OFF. Pretty simple, even I can understand that.

I think its CHEAP! for a one time purchase for lifetime! Still kicking my self for not doing it with XM Radio when I had the chance! But I did get lifetime with Ooma free phone and number for VOIP for life no fees!

We had a Plex Staff member call Plex a social media platform yesterday.

It is not a personal media platform, hasn’t been for quite some time.

It is just that Plex is openly telling us all now and not hiding their direction.

Once you accept that, it is then your choice to try and reduce the social media aspect and maximise the personal media functionality.

It is partially possible but every day, more gets thrown in the mix.

Discussions being the latest.

They tried to be a media aggregation site. Was not really that successful.

They are now trying to compete with the likes of Messenger Groups, FB groups (which I personally have used for some time if I felt the need to discuss media with family and friends). There is also Reddit etc if you want a more public place.

I have a Lifetime PlexPass I bought years ago and some may say I don’t really have a say anymore because I’m not a paying customer. However, I have plenty of family and friends that are paying customers that access my server.

I have no issue at all with where Plex is going if it means they survive but I do wish they would address the large number of issues that have existed for years across their offerings (server and client). Some very simple issues.

The frequency of updates has dramatically dropped away. Due in part to key Plex people who have either moved on or suffered from the downsizing that has occurred a few times in the past 13 years I have been with them.

Anyone not happy with the offering has options/alternatives. Perhaps wth their own downsides. At least there is some level of choice available.

Edit - I am just one of the more than 40 million Plex users out there so I am just a drop in the bucket or more accurately, ocean.

I said that it’s expensive compared to the previous price. You may think it’s cheap, but it’s certainly not cheap relative to the previous prices.

I’m not really complaining, as there are other options out there that are available. It’s just that plex at the price isn’t for me, as there are other options that will do all that i need for free. If it’s worth it for your needs, by all means use Plex.

$250 for a lifetime pass

I’m dying over here imagining your face when you catch up on the latest announcement. The new $750 price tag starting July 1 is finally making $250 look reasonable.

If you only want free, why did you purchase PlexPass ?

Free alternatives (with caveats) have been around for years.

Yeah, I’m aware. I was trying not to totally pile on the negative. l was trying to be polite. I’m totally aware of what’s in the pipeline.

The price for PlexPass was reasonable, and I’m comfortable with Plex, so I never bothered to look around.

I started looking around when they dropped the first of the social media platform functions on us. The Plex ‘porn’ incident years ago kicked it off for me.

I’m still looking without much success.

So is it Jellyfin or Kodi or something else ?

I stood up Jellyfin recently (have had it on and off for the past year or so now). Got remote access working and had a friend finally give it a try. He’s running on a Roku so was comparing the standard Roku client to Plex client and said JF was a lot faster at loading and playing.

I tested the Samsung client today on my Frame TV (normally use Apple TV w/Infuse) and it played without issues at all.

No, it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that Plex has, but I control everything and there’s tons of add-ons to extend it. For myself and my handful of friends that use my server, I’m sure JF will work just fine. Plus I have zero concerns about privacy now.
