Creating a new web based agent for home videos

Hey guys,

My family recently had a baby girl and I'm finding myself take more and more home videos but not doing anything with them. Since we share our Plex media library with my baby's grandparents through myPlex, I wanted to organize the home videos in Plex and give the grandparents the ability to stream the baby videos through Plex and actually see useful descriptions of the various clips.

To make the long story short, I'm now looking to create a web based metadata agent for Home Videos.

Basically, if you take videos with your phone, camera, or camcorder, I think this service will be very useful for you in keeping things organized for sharing. Also, by keeping the metadata in the cloud, you won't have to worry about files going missing, going corrupt, or having to dig up old preferences buried in some folder every time you need to reinstall or clean your Plex library. You should be able to just point your Home Videos section to ping the new metadata agent and download all your information the way you set it up.

Right now, I am thinking of following the organization structure of TV Shows. Users will be able to setup something like:

Life of Baby Girl
- Season 1 (Year 1)
-- s01e01 - birth.avi
-- s01e02 - first ride home.avi
..
..
-- s01e19 - first solid foods.avi
-- s01e20 - first birthday.avi
- Season 2 (Year 2)
..
..

etc.

I wanted to do an unscientific poll here to see if all of you who take home videos basically manage your videos in a similar type of naming structure and if its drastically different, how do you do it?

We would like to support the community as easily as possible so please feel free to chime in with what you'd like to see and I'll start compiling some notes. Right now, I'm aiming for an early 2012 release since I really want to solve this problem for myself. Hopefully, everything will work out as planned.

As a family we love Plex but it falls woefully short on the home movie front.



Any efforts to improve this would be most welcome.



I would like my home movies to be organised by year, for Plex to display the file name not just episode 3 and to display a thumbnail from the beginning of the clip (or even better a chosen location within the clip.

We’re starting development on this project now - have already chatted with the Plex team to get some idea how to best work with Plex.

I don’t tend to look in this forum as much as some of the others, so I didn’t see this until just now. But yeah, I’m definitely interested in such a service.



I’m sure there is quite a bit more interest too, but a lot of people probably just don’t see these posts as much as the general forum and help forums.

Just installed Plex, but like you want to start viewing the increasing number of clips of my young ones and share with grandparents overseas.
Was just searching the forum to see if home video section was getting any love, this look great.
