Dashboard and Direct Play apple lossless broken

Server Version#: 1.15.4.919
Player Version#: Mac OS 3.83.2, Plex Amp, 5.13 I think on iOS.

The Dashboard magically does not show direct play / transcoding status for plexamp and iOS. The desktop client for Mac OS is transcoding Apple lossless to opus. The only acceptable mode is direct play for music. Why would I use tidal thru plex if it can’t get my local media right?

Plexamp and iOS can both direct play ALAC audio (I’m literally listening to an ALAC track in Plexamp now), however, perhaps your browser doesn’t support ALAC? Can you provide some logs showing the desktop client transcoding to Opus, please?

I installed Tauntulli and it allowed me to see that iOS and Plexamp was using direct play. The dashboard in the plex desktop app was not displaying that info. The Mac OS Desktop client is still transcoding, and I am not sure why. Thank you for the help.

Unfortunately, I can’t get anything from those logs, as you don’t appear to have debug logging enabled. If you could enable that, recreate the issue, and provide more logs, it would be greatly appreciated.

A good UX/UI designer would have caught that, the option to enable debug logging should be under troubleshooting next to download logs. My issue seems to be my m4a ALAC files that I ripped with iTunes are being treated as if they are in MKV containers.

According to the logs, Direct Play is disabled, which is why it doesn’t direct play it, and transcodes instead. What happens if you enable direct play in PMP?

Direct play is and has been enabled in PMP. I even uninstalled PMP and reinstalled it. It will sometimes start off direct play then switch even on my local network.

So there is no solution? Will Plex ever be reliable?

Can you check the settings in TV mode, and see if it’s enabled there?

I just checked and direct play is enabled there as well. Here is my plex media player config file.

Can you provide the log from PMP?

Here is the log from PMP, different computer exact same issue. I no longer have access to the other computer.

Any news?

Unfortunately, no. Your logs do confirm that the track is being converted, but does not say why. I had someone on the team test and they were able to direct play ALAC. Can you change PMP to TV mode,. playback the file again, then get me the PMP log file? https://support.plex.tv/articles/207338748-plex-media-player-logs/

I am having same issue, I am playing ALAC format audio on am iMac, on Safari, I see that Plex is transcoding from ALAC to AAC.
