Debian - Info on adding Plex repo is outdated

Server Version#: (Newest - Can’t Update to it!)

I’m using Plex instructions (https://support.plex.tv/articles/235974187-enable-repository-updating-for-supported-linux-server-distributions/) and I tried to add the key for the repo with the line:

curl https://downloads.plex.tv/plex-keys/PlexSign.key | sudo apt-key add -

When I do, I get an error:

Warning: apt-key is deprecated. Manage keyring files in trusted.gpg.d instead (see apt-key(8)).
gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found.

How to fix this? Will it still work with Debian, or is the server and this page deprecated?

What do I need to do to add the repo to a Debian system?

What Debian release are you using? The portion of the instructions you snipped above is only relevant to Debian versions before 10.

The correct way to install Plex Media Server on Debian 10 or later is to perform the initial installation using the appropriate PMS package from here:

https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/?cat=computer&plat=linux#plex-media-server

The installation process automatically creates the repo source in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/. You only need to uncomment the repo in plexmediaserver.list in that directory and perform an apt update.

Future public PMS updates will then be available via APT. Note that Plex Pass betas are not available via APT.

Thank you! I misunderstood. While the title for the section following the part I snipped stated it was for 10, there is nothing in that top part that says what versions it works on.

Got it installed and working. Now updating it by copying my data from the old server over.

You’re welcome, glad you got it working. And for what it’s worth, I think that document could be formatted a little better to more clearly differentiate the processes.

I was trying to think of a polite way to put that - but it’s hard to think clearly on a few hours of sleep! (And last time I suggested a content change on a community project, it turned out it was to the person who wrote the content and was rather upset I didn’t think it was perfect!)
