What a day it’s been today, a day I thought I probably wouldn’t see but it’s happened anyway.
It appears the majority of Plex users have received an email about a data breach. I’m thankful to the Plex team on how quickly they acted. Although it’s brought some issues to light in the process.
Assuming investigations are still ongoing, it would be nice to know how exactly the attacker managed to access what should be a “confidential” database (or table) and whether the Plex servers that we’re running in our homes on our own network is comprised someway.
I’ve been a huge fan of Plex since 2014 now, when the community wasn’t as large and things were less “integrated” with centralised services hosted by Plex.
I’ve also had a Plex Pass for quite some time now.
Going forward however I don’t think I can continue with this centralised approach of account hosting etc. If the Plex server I install on my network had the ability to hold its own accounts, that would be really nice to properly “cut the cord”, I won’t be reliant on Plex hosted services and things will work, even if these centralised services are down.
Are there plans for a decentralised approach where Plex servers are 100% independent from the cloud (even accounts)?
On the subject of this breach. My server is now unclaimed for the first time in a number of years, yes, I know how to fix it, but I’m not too fussed on fixing it anymore. Plex is great, but until a decentralised approach can be built, I think I’m going to have to “divorce” myself from Plex, moving over to something like Jellyfin.
Thank you Plex for the great work over the past years and how “easy” you made it to spin up and host your own “streaming service”.
