Default All Clients to Max Internet Streaming

Haha! Maybe I will when Android have full ASS/SSA support. :joy:

But seriously, though. It would be really nice to have more control over how and why a transcode happens as a server owner. Being able to decouple the transcode resolution from the bandwidth limit would be really nice.

This! This is what Id prefer as well! Default to max, but IF the user chooses to transcode anyways, allow me as the server admin to set a max cap to save cpu.

Excellent idea!

I don’t want to limit the maximum quality. The users can have the highest quality available if their device/app will direct play it. Using that option would force a lot of unnecessary full transcodes, wouldn’t it?

I don’t know how that would work if only one stream needed to be transcoded, since one stream could be direct played, and the other transcoded to a compatible format. I’m mostly thinking of simply transcoding audio in this case, which most servers can deal with very well.

In any event, @sensei321’s suggestion is a good one, if you could implement it somehow.

Hey you calm down sir. I know you pay for this service and all…but you’ll get this fix when you get it. Probably in a year or two.

This is already an option under “remote access” by selecting “limit remote stream bitrate”

Doesnt that prevent direct play?

It does. As DaveBinM already confirmed a just above. It isn’t a solution unless you’d want more transcodes to happen…

Ahah. I appreciate the irony, but what is even more baffling is that even those 2 years don’t seem enough!!

Great to see this getting some traction, @elan @DaveBinM is there anything us mere mortals can do to help test / provide feedback?

+1 for wanting more server side control on default quality (prefer original/directplay)

I am not going to get my hopes up about this. I am running into a new issue with this app when I adjust the settings to use max bandwidth it works great and users are able to direct stream. Only problem is when the app updates users are losing the setting I put in place causing them to go back to transcoding things. This is very frustrating and like everyone else I wonder how hard it is to make the default max.

this is a bad bug, where are you seeing this (exact client/version)?

I’ve seen this happen semi-regularly, but not every time, when the Android app updates. Several of my users are using Fire devices.

The bandwidth/quality settings revert to default, and I notice because they start transcoding again. Fixing the settings (again) resolves it.

They don’t have any problems staying logged in. If other settings revert to default, I haven’t noticed.

Edit: I haven’t noticed it on Roku or Apple TV, FWIW.

Basically all Platforms. I have noticed this on Roku, Playstation, Vizio TV and others.

thanks, i’ve passed this to the team.

I and many others have mentioned this a long time ago. I wish it would have been passed to the team sooner.

This is why we all get so upset. :frowning:

 I feel your pain. Plex is such a great product its unfortunate they roll out updates without addressing major issues.

Any updates on this?

Yeah, would love to have something more concrete on this but as ever we’re greeted with silence

According to @elan should be done within the next 4 months.
I am a bit sceptical though
