Default All Clients to Max Internet Streaming

I agree that the default for ALL clients should be Automatic quality, then it’s up to the client/user to limit the bandwidth if they so desired because of limited plans.

Also for all players to make it more visible what it is actually streaming, so at the very start of the video it can show in the bottom right AUTO/4k/1080å/720p or whatever is the case, kind of like what is in youtube. It should be visible for 2-3 seconds at the very start like an overlay to raise awareness.

add it to play before every video XD

+1 This feature is what might make me decide to go back to Emby

Imagine still not having this “feature”…

Gotta have this feature! From a plex pass user / admin perspective, why should the default plex client option be to unnecessarily strain my CPU for transcodes when the client’s internet speed can sustain a much higher quality stream - even direct/max?

Users generally stick with default options, they are used to streaming platforms like Netflix where these sorts of choices aren’t even available to them, they don’t think about this stuff.

Please enable the plex server admins to set a preferred remote stream bitrate for their clients where the client default would be to respect this server preference, yet still be able to override if they so desire. This comment up above sums this up nicely:

This new server option could be put on the SETTINGS > Remote Access page right near Limit remote stream bitrate.

Every single person I get to try watching something from my server comments on how it looks like ■■■■ and I have to tell them to go change the settings to make it not look like ■■■■.

Plex your idiotic defaults are giving you a bad reputation.

If they don’t mind being booted for refusal to follow instructions…lol

The rest of your post:

Is much too logical to ever make it to the design stage.

Juice keep in mind, that there are folks who have access to multiple servers, potentially with or without their own server.

The problem with remote servers having absolute control, is it removes choice from the client user, who may well be incompetent, or may well know more than the remote server owner.

In any case, it is the same scenario as whether the server owner should control other plex accounts access to plex online services.

Knowing my users - the latter can not occur - but I do want to find out what’s going on over there, so I would probably ask them, of course.

I actually found this useful the other day.
I’m still glad it wasn’t on by default.

The admin’s preference may be different, which makes sense for it to be a configurable option, one that the client respects by default, but can override if they desire without going above the set limit.

Some owners may prefer to reduce their bandwidth by having a lower default bitrate at the cost of handling the transcodes while others may prefer to reduce their utilization and serve higher quality content by having more direct streams at the cost of consuming more bandwidth.

It’s a decision the Plex owner should be allowed to make as they know their constraints and their users. I believe setting both a preferred bitrate in addition to the limit would be a valuable enhancement.

We need a mechanism to set some sensible preferred defaults.

This is one my biggest gripes/wishes. Being able to set the default for clients and then let them adjust if needed seems like the common sense solution but I’m Not holding my breath.

It seems like my shares All default to 2m/720p unnecessarily. Being able to turn the default up improves their picture and saves a little of my cpu would be Win/win.

+5000 to this, Plex please… This has been requested for years. How about you set down your own agenda for a few weeks and listen to the users who pay your paychecks.

If nothing else, explain why you won’t do it, or just straight up say you won’t, so that we can make the decision to keep complaining or to move to a different media solution that supports this very basic “feature”.

i agreed i have to have all the devices at my home to change all the clients settings before i hand them out. I thought a client - server relationship was the client is governed by the server not the other way round. all that needs to happen is the app by default installs on maximum local maximum remote. it is set to maximum local why is it set to 2MB remote. seems crazy

I would love to see all the client settings governed by the server at some point but not to bothered if it never happens but the remote quality seems mental!

Yes please. Every other streaming provider already checks what your connection can handle behind the scenes to avoid giving you 480p quality when you are sitting on a fast line. If you feel uncomfortable with this at least ask a few questions whenever a new device is connected to optimise playback settings. I mean all you need to know is the download speed and if the connection is capped or not. That should put anything that’s not capped and with a greater download speed equal to or greater than 50 Mb to maximum by default.

this would be great feature, it is a pain, when you invite family to your plex server. and you are trying to explain how to change the quality settings to original or to MAX and they don’t understand you. so then you have to go round to there house and spend like 2 minutes changing the settings.

plus like others have said. when it is transcoding form e.g 1080p - 720p 4Mbps it kills my cpu, when i have more then 5 people transcoding. they all can play direct. but none have the knowledge, on how to change the setting, and most of them don’t understand full how plex works. so this feature would be REALLY GREAT, GET IT ADDED ASAP!!! lol

This x 1000, literally my only gripe with Plex.

I have users with 4k TV’s and fast internet watching my 4k files at 720p…gotta love it. I have more than enough CPU and bandwidth to handle a few transcodes…but its unnecessary 98% of the time. PLEASE give us this feature.

I agree. Max should be deafault. I have just turned off transcoding entirely due to this headache. Ideally, Id only allow me and my close family to use the transcoder, but unfortulately, the approach seem to be all or nothing.

That’s funny…I just turned off transcoding as well. There is no reason why they can’t set the max resolution as the default…other than them just being lazy. I bet if we all canceled our plex pass they would get right on it.
