Is the idea that it will eventually be enabled by default for everyone?
What do you mean by this? Will it not try maximum in all cases?
Looks like it chooses the max quality possible, based on the result of the speed test it runs.
From my testing it seems to all work as you all expect it to though ![]()
On first play to a specific server, it will go for maximum (or the highest it can go depending on any limit you have set), and then it offers downgrades depending on how well playback goes.
It would be enabled by default for everyone, it aims to solve the problem of having the default set to maximum whilst allowing users to easily downgrade incases where the connection can’t handle maximum playback.
Initially it’s only for Android, if it works out well we will start to implement it on other clients (depending on capabilities of the client).
Cool thanks!
Is the “you” here the client or the server?
Either / both, it won’t go higher than the client’s remote quality limit, or the servers upload limit.
Seems to be 2 seperate features, the suggestions to step up / down quality can be disabled in the settings but not sure why you’d want to. I’ve only seen it if I’ve manually set the quality back to 2Mbps l, and it’s told me I can increase the quality due to the speed of my connection to the server.
I can only see you getting the prompt to lower the quality if something else starts downloading / using your connection after initial playback which leaves Plex with less bandwidth that originally.
The ‘automatic quality’ appears to be part of the app now, again not sure why you’d want to turn it off but from all my testing I’ve not been able to break anything, it all seems to work perfectly.
Well done Plex Devs! ![]()
Will client default settings to maximum going forward (and migrate existing users to that)? If not then I’m struggling to see how this will help.
This is currently the issue.
Will the default remote quality setting be changed to maximum?
Yes the new default for the new feature (which all new and existing users should eventually have) sets the default to Maximum.
Sounds good, thanks for the information.
Looking forward to trying it out!
The end of the year really delivered.
This. The beginning of AV1 support. Unified actor views.
ASS/SSA-support on Android earlier in the year. So many long standing missing features are finally implemented. Overall 2022 has been a good Plex year, I’d say.
Please keep on implementing more highly requested features coming in 2023. ![]()
@sixones @DaveBinM when this new feature gets released, will it also solve the problem stated here which only affects some Android clients?
This is the best news I’ve ever heard from the Plex team.
After working on 3920382358 features that nobody cares about they finally did the one thing that everyone wants.
Thank you for providing more value for my Lifetime Plex Pass purchase
Yes and no, Adjust Automatically isnt used with the new feature so the subtitle problem doesnt exist.
So then how do these two features interact with each other?
Adjust Automatically and the Speed Detection/Quality Suggestions are in no way related, and do not interact at all. The intention is that this would replace Adjust Automatically.
So it will still be a little wait before it comes to Apple TV?
Glad it’s getting worked on, but… ![]()
