HI, I’d really like to switch from KODI to Plex full time, but there is one feature I cant get to work on plex. All my movies are ripped with AAC as the first audio track and AC3 as the second. By default Plex always selects AAC track despite me ticking the AC3 option in settings. Kodi has an option to upgrade the audio to AC3 where available, which works perfectly. Is there no equivalent in Plex ? ( I know I can set it manually for every … single… movie… or tv series…I … watch ;-))
+1 There are dozens of these types of requests all over the Plex forums, but no resolution. Some date back to 2009!
I would like a resolution or workaround for this issue. My Mac defaults fine to AC3 5.1 but the PS4 defaults to AC3 Stereo. PS4 is connected via HDMI to a Marantz NR1500 6.1 amp.
I can manually choose AC3 5.1 and it’ll output lovely in 5.1 but I cannot get the setup on the PS4 to remember the settings and auto select 5.1 like my Mac does.
Any advice and any help would be welcomed, thanks to all in advance.

Not specific to the PlayStation, but you might want to follow this topic:

Thank you, yes I’ve read through that thread and a few others like it. I am in the same situation the PS4 Plex client picks the first track as I’m assuming it cannot detect an AC3 5.1 compatible output. You don’t get many options on the PS4 for sound output as you say did on the PS3, well not over HDMI from what I can see. I’m going to have a look at the passthrough options on my Marantz amp later on and I’ll report back. I’m not too confident however as the auto switching on the amp is spot on for games, music, films through the XMB and media played directly via the Media Player app. I added to this thread as I presume I’ve got the config wrong in the Plex PS4 app. I expected the correct behaviour from choosing the AC3 option in the settings.
So I’ll report back on tweaking the amp?
I’ll also run a small video through Handbrake and test the audio options. I’m going to add lots of tracks to see what works leaving the default first one for iTunes and iDevices →
Track 1: AAC 2.0 → AAC (Stereo)
Track 2: AC3 5.1 → AAC (5.1)
Track 3: AC3 5.1 → AC3 (5.1)
Track 4: AC3 5.1 → AC3 (Passthru)
The app suck really much, period. I have only movies and tv shows in 5.1 AC3 and still play in stereo (with or without the Dolby Digital setting checked) !! The video quality is like a DVD too and I have very high quality video. I though and wished to switch to my PS4 for the media player but this is a big fail. I use my Mac to play full HD quality with 5.1. PS4 version of the media player is far from the quality of the version for desktop. Not impressed at all.
