I have 4K and 1080p versions of films in the same library. I can just ‘choose version’ for which one I want to watch.
I read somewhere that, if Plex needs to transcode, it will default to the highest quality version of a film. Is this true? If a remote user sets there quality to 4Mbps, will the server default to transcoding the 4K version?
That depends. We recently added the ability for clients to tell PMS to transcode other versions that better match what the client is requesting. For example, if your quality settings are set to original, then it will likely choose the 4K version, if your settings are 4Mbps, then the 1080 version will likely be used. This will depend on the client and the decision is not guaranteed, but now possible. Older clients will not have this ability.
Thank you! That’s helpful. I’m really glad the response isn’t “you need to separate everything into different libraries.”
Is there anywhere I can find which clients behave which way? Should I check the release notes? Mostly wondering about Roku and Fire Stick, but I’m curious about SamsungTVs and iOS too.
Does this also apply if I have a 5Mbps 1080p version and a 40Mbps 1080p version? Will it default to transcoding the 5Mbps version if 4Mbps is selected? That would be great to help with some server overhead when decoding.
