Auto select 4K and 1080P with multi-version movies

When playing a 4K and 1080P multi-version movie, all players always choose the 4K version, even on Full HD screens, making my server transcode it. I can manually choose the 1080P version, but it would be better if the player chooses 1080P content on 1080P automatically (because I’m sure my family members will forget to select the 1080P version)

Until Plex implements such capability, the approach most people take is to keep 4K material in a separate library, ex: “Movies” and “Movies - 4K.” Then tell the family members to only play 4K movies on the 4K TVs.

Could you, or someone then please help me understand why the jump from 1080p to 4k doesn’t apply to Plex’s Multi-Version movie support as they outline, here? It seems that it works only with quality from SD - 1080p, but somehow 4k is in a league of its own.

In my situation, I have everyone throttled to 720p @ 4Mbps both because they can’t tell a difference between it and 1080p, and our upload pipe can handle up to 7Mbps. Ideally, Plex would recognize this scenario of user throttling, and choose the least taxing quality to transcode.
