1 no.
2 there wasn’t any problem with the originals
3 you should simply look at the specs or search the internet for the specific model you are interested, not all models may support the same things.
Arc passes any lossy audio format, so up to DTS and Dolby Digital. Any HD audio format will not pass through ARC. If you talk eARC, than that is a different story.
not all tvs will pass dts.
Though I have in the past not felt the love for the Shield and found HDR especially cold compared to the ATV4K and LG TV native app, that’s all changed.
ExoPlayer 2 with Plex own tweaks not to mention the Shield 2019’s upscaling has made it my go to device.
Is it Samsung that just recently pulled the plug on DTS?
I believe so, possibly others.
In any case, it comes down to the specific brand/model of tv, they are not all equal.
also, it bears repeating, an nvidia shield alone is not the solution.
you do need a 4k/hdr/atmos compatible receiver to get any HD audio.
Sorry for the wrong info then.
No need. I think they just pulled DTS on the latest models… Strange I know.
They’re probably pissed because their beloved HDR10+ is being marginalized by pretty much everyone else. Is that because it’s free but mediocre or because I’m currently watching Chasing Conspiracies - TheTVDB.com
an A/V reciever? how about a soundbar that does trueHD decoding over hdmi?
ok sure, if the shield is plugged into the soundbar, and not the tv.
ADT-3
new android tv developer device
whether it does any pass through, or if plex can/will support it, remains to be seen.
e-arc mybe, not Arc. Arc only DD+.
ARC is in principle able to transport DTS (core) and DD(+), nothing above. The capabilities are identical to those of SPDIF (optical) connection.
Cnet article with a nice table comparing toslink, hdmi-arc, and hdmi-earc.
even with e-arc, there has been no confirmed combination of e-arc smart tv with plex + e-arc receiver or soundbar, that passes HD audio.
I suspect, that e-arc is only designed to pass through HD from bluray or other hardware devices over hdmi.
I suspect that we will not get E-ARC over SOFTWARE from the tv directly. Meaning we will probably not see any smart tvs that can direct play and pass through HD audio through a built in plex app.
I would love to be proved wrong though.
I think I’m heading toward a divorce by even asking this question… because it means I’m looking to spend more money on an already over-budget mini-theater room that I BARELY talked my wife into!
I thought I had this all sorted, but now see I can’t actually get Atmos. I think I’m learning that’s because the ARC doesn’t support it.
A year and a half ago, this thread seemed to be suggesting the Shield. Is that still the way to go as we roll into 2020?
I recently bought a Denon AVRX-3600H and Samsung RU8000 TV and a bunch of speakers (5.1.4) naively thinking I’d hear helicopters flying overhead. What do I need at this point to make it happen? A shield only? I’m not entirely familiar with it, but I gather that’s like a jacked up Roku / Chromecast, right? Does it plug directly into the AVR, or do I need another HDMI cable too (if so, what standard? 2.1?)
Thanks
Nothing has changed since the original release of the shield.
It still is the only main stream solution for trued/atmos.
Every week someone asks if this has changed.
It has not, and is unlikely to change any time soon.
Buy a Shield. Plug it into the Denon. Enjoy 5.1.4 TrueHD + Atmos.
Note some people have mentioned issues with the new Shield tube version. If go you with one of the 2019 models, suggest you get the Pro.
The primary difference between 2019 and earlier models is that the 2019 models support Dolby Vision and HDR10. The earlier models are HDR10 only.
Thanks. Two follow-up questions:
- I will need an HDMI cable, right? It mentions the port is 2.0b. Do I need to be that specific?
- It says it comes with PMS?!?! Do I have to use that server? Or can it be client-only? I already have the server, of course. (follow-follow-up… SHOULD I use the Shield server? I imagine my $2000 rig is overall more capable though)
Cheers.
Don’t use the Shield as a PMS if you don’t have to. You don’t have to, so don’t use it
I serves well as client only.
Thanks!
