Running PMS 1.5.5.3634 and PMP 1.3.1/2 on 3 Macs. Dolby TrueHD correctly outputs to all 8 channels.
DTS does not - console reads 5.1 (side) -> 7.1 (for dolby it says 7.1. -> 7.1). However, there is no sound coming from either of the surround back rear speakers.
It is not an encoding issue, as I have double checked with official demos from Dolby and DTS.
Any help appreciated.
PS Are so few people running 7.1 setups that this has not yet come up?
Can anyone with a 7.1 setup please check whether they have the same behaviour for DTS?
My 7.1 setup works great, but I don’t have Mac for clients so I can’t really help troubleshoot your issue.
I’ve done a bit of troubleshooting of my own.
I’ve booted the MBP into Windows (native mode) and Dolby TrueHD works perfectly both as passthrough and when decoded by Plex.
DTS HD-MA only works correctly in passthrough mode.
If you disable passthrough and force PMP to decode it, DTS behaves exactly as on macOS - both surround rear speakers are dead. The console reads 5.1 (side) -> 5.1 (in macOS it read 5.1 (side) -> 7.1, but both surround rear speakers were dead anyway).
And what the beep is 5.1 (side)?!?!
Problem is, passthrough is not available in macOS for HD audio (no codecs). I would have happily put it in passthrough mode and left the receiver to do the heavy lifting, as it should be.
Thoughts? Should I file a bug with plex or is it enough ti post it here?
And since I’m a bit upset, can someone explain why every other month plex feels like breaking 7.1 audio?
Yes, I am still watching movies
In glorious 5.1… Like it’ 2004
Jokes aside, my GF and I have been playing the Avenegers Lego games, so she wanted to see the Avengers movies as well. We watched in 5.1, and all along I just kept thinking that I might as well just look for the BluRay disc and pop it in the player

DTS Inc forced Plex to downmix DTS-HD MA from 7.1 to 5.1 when decoding as LPCM. This was talked about a lot a while back.
Thank you! Terrible, horrible news (to me, at least, apparently) because that means Windows, but thank you.
A Gen5 (Broadwell) or Gen6 (Skylake) NUC with PMP embedded may fulfill your needs for HD audio passthrough if you are willing to buy a new device.
Indeed, I was considering a NUC as well. Gen7s have been out for a few months and I might as well go for now and future-proof - I understand that i5s can play 4k without much sweat.
The only downside here is that I will need to use Windows, which is not necessarily something that I am looking forward to.
Oh, and I’ll need to find a new remote that hopefully is just as small and works just as fine as the Apple remote.

Yeah, pretty ■■■■■■ move on DTS Inc’s part. From what we can tell Plex were basically forced into a corner with that one.
Another option is NVIDIA Shield, I believe it’s capable of playback of all audio formats.
It stings me too, as a Mac user. RIP XBMC for Mac
I’m using Plex for Kodi an a Mac mini which does still support DTS-MA 7.1, as far as I can tell.

It’s much harder to bully open source software devs.
The Shield is definitely a good option.
Do Xbox and PS4 clients require transcoding? I assume yes
The Shield would be a good option, but I’m running out of space to put things, so I would rather replace something that I already have than add a new device
DTS-HD MA/Dolby TrueHD passthrough also works on the OpenPHT client for Mac.
Odroid-C2 and OpenPHT will handle all your HD Codecs, 4k and HEVC video, etc, at a fraction of the cost of a NUC or Shield…
They’re credit card sized boxes (well, like an inch tall stack of credit cards) that you can mount with a piece of velcro, pretty much taking up no space…

@OmegaRed1723 : are you sure? I thought passthrough cannot work on Mac as there are no codec/drivers.
I have managed however to make OpenPHT decode DTS-HD MA as 7.1. LPCM and it works!!! So it does work as LPCM, but not as passthrough.
Many thanks to all for your suggestions

LibreELEC with the Plex for Kodi addon is probably a better choice. (Plex Pass only)
@danjames92 care to elaborate why it’s “probably a better choice?”
I have 5 Shields and couldn’t be happier with them. Great devices all around! Plays 4k, all lossless audio formats from plex including Atmos and DTS:X
