Disable transcoding on a per user basis

Hey all.

Would it be possible to add to the the disable transcoding feature so we can allow for certain users?

For example, disabling has mainly been great for me and my users, however there are ones such as my parents who have a slow Internet connection and need to transcode stuff down to 10mbps, however I still want everyone else to play original.

First of all, Im very excited that the possibility to turn video transcoding off finally is here. I love everything about it and I really couldnt ask for more. But I will anyways: Would it be possible to allow home users to still transcode while excluding everyone else? I dont mind friends using my BW, I just dont want them to hog Resources from my CPU. But every now and then Id like to limit my own and my daughters BW usage when we are on the og so I would love to see a user differentiation

Please i want to be able to configure who can transcode and who can’t. I have a powerfull server but at some point are to manny user and i have a problem with this.

So I’m wondering is it possible to disable transcoding on a per user basis ? I know this would give the affected users lot of “Your device does not support this format” errors but i’d rather have that then some users hogging all the CPU time. This could simply be added as a check button in the restrictions tab,

Same goes for setting client playback quality from server side… however there’s already been lots of comments explaining that that’s killing the purpose (e.g. if you force users to play a 4K or high quality 1080p file in original quality over their mobile data plan).

Thanks. I think that would be a good middle ground between server admins wanting direct play and managing users’ bandwidth etc

Thats not a good middle ground at all. For this to work, everything must be transcoded. Its good for people with shoddy connections, so from a technical standpoint, its a great sollution. But if you want to limit cpu usage, this is a feature you wanna turn off.

Also, if you are on cellular and have data caps, id advise setting a fixed bitrate in the client, rather than having no control over the bitrate at all.

Agreed, users can be hopeless and having some control over their bandwidth allocation is a no brainer.

Plex really has a lot to gain by improving server settings. As it stands, I have kicked off pretty much all my users as I have next to no control over their usage. Im not adding new ones. I imagine a lot of server owners feel the same way.

Never mind, Tautulli with a few simple scripts does everything I need.
And I’m sure Plex devs will adopt good ideas progressively.

The new intro analyzer feature really illustrates how exceptions to the «disable video transcoding» setting is needed. Disabeling transcoding cripples the analyzer completely.
