disable transcoding (per user setting)

Hi,

I would love to have a feature that would allow me to disable transcoding on a per-user base. I share my media amongst some users but I have to ask them to only directplay (using the plex theatre app on PC/MAC) because otherwise after 4 concurrent sessions my CPU starts to give up ...

thanks for considering !

I would love this feature, but i would like to add to the feature request the ability to also control the maximum bandwith per user.

The only thing holding me back in sharing my media server with more people is that my CPU usage and bandwith is not sufficient enough to share with more people. If i could control those 2 i could share with more people.

If you were to disable transcoding, the media might not play at all.  It would be more efficient for your system to find out why it is transcoding and resolve that issue, DirectPlay is best anyways.

There is already several requests to limit the bandwidth.

If you transcode to a lower bitrate, it will use more CPU power but less bandwidth.  If there is no transcoding, low CPU usage but typically higher bandwidth.  So you are stuck in a pick 1 or the other situation.  The only way to really control these is to reencode your files to a lower bitrate and to a format that will not require transcoding.

Yes please!

Maybe in combination with a filter that hides everything not playable....

I got loads of bandwith but not mutch of computing capacity on the server, so this would be perfect for me.

I have enough bandwidth to theoretically allow direct play to several users at once.  Problem is, at least one of my user does not have a good enough connection, so transcoding is necessary to bring it down to an acceptable bitrate to prevent buffering. I tried making multiple versions, one with a lower bitrate and resolution, and that just caused a different problem - the lower bitrate one was served to almost everyone (particularly Roku) because it had a stereo audio track instead of surrround.  Unfortunately, the lowest common denominator was the only winner :(

Doing a quick search I was unable to find a similar request so here goes.

I would be great is it was possible to configure, if a user may stream using transcoding or only use direct play.

Having several users accessing a server, some are using transcoding even though the server and the user have the bandwith to use direct play, thus using a lot of CPU on the server.

The setting should be user specific.

Adding to the request, not knowing 100 % if this is already possible, it would be great if it was possible to set a max amount of simultaneous users using either transcoding and direct play.

As an example:

The server is set to allow two users to use transcode and three may use direct play.

Two users is streaming using transcoding and a third wants to transcode, then he/she get a message that it's not possible but direct play is available.

Very much a feature I would also like to see !

IMO/Idealistically, this could/would be merged into the Parental Controls system. This would allow a nice feature set for all sorts of “Access Controls” (aka ACLs) to be made.

Yeah it would be very handy to define who may use transcoding or only direct play.

+1

Would love this aswell. I dont mind my friends streaming but Id prefer it if I could prevent them from transcoding.

See this thread for similar feture request:

Please i want to be able to configure who can transcode and who can’t. I have a powerfull server but at some point are to manny user and i have a problem with this.

So I’m wondering is it possible to disable transcoding on a per user basis ?

I know this would give the affected users lot of “Your device does not support this format” errors but i’d rather have that then some users hogging all the CPU time.

This could simply be added as a check button in the restrictions tab,

Using PlexPy you could use a custom script to accomplish this. The script will kill a transcode stream once it starts and will display a message on the user’s client. Killing streams is a Plex Pass only feature.

But this would simply be a work around.

The option to disable transcoding totally is really nice and much appreciated !

But I wish we could control transcoding at user level. I know some of my users always have a decent internet connection and they should always use the original quality.

Thank you!

So can we have this now please? People have been begging for six years now.

Please?

Hi everyone and thank you to all Plex creators how provide an awsome UX to VOD… moreover in times of quarantine.

As some users here, I would love to have this feature. Here is why:

  • I have a DS1819+ (which lack transcoding capabilities: I can transcode only 1 stream)
  • My DS1819+ is connected to optical fiber and has way enough bandwith to share multiple 1080p videos (eventually 4K too).
  • I share my Plex Server with my parents and some friends.
  • My parents have a bad ADSL (not always good enough to stream 1080p in original quality).
  • I give access to my Plex Server to friends IF they have a good connection to stream in original quality.
  • Some of my friends aren’t nerds and don’t understand much about how to configurate Plex… and from times to times access to Plex trough a new configuration that will transcode.

Then, I have my CPU runing at 80-95% when it could be avoided and, if my parents want to watch something, they might not be abble to do so. (They are my priority.)

So, I can :

  • Disable transcoding (for everyone): it’s not acceptable as my parents need it, even myself sometimes.
  • Ask people to disable transcoding and set their new configuration… but it’s always painful for me (distance, interfaces, lack of knowledge as they don’t understand what “transcoding” means…).
  • Stop their stream when needed… (also a pain point as it could be avoided)

Consquently, I currently limit the number of transcoding to 1 or 2 and do my best to control each configuration… but it would be nice if there could be a checkbox “Allow transcoding” in the restrictions of an user.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
