Discussions should be OFF by default

Stop adding features that are opt-out by deafult. Nobody asked for this.

Another stupid switch to turn off. Another stupid announcment screen that interrupts my app usage.

Stop. Killing. Plex.

That is one viewpoint. If they add a new feature and have the switch off by default, how would anyone know of it’s existance?

The intro blurb is unavoidable

Nobody asked for it so its existence never mattered.

I don’t need a pop-up in the app, and I don’t need it to be on by default to know a feature exists.

Email has existed for a long time and you should’ve considered that before suggesting that spam is the only answer.

What matters is getting constantly spammed by these new features that interrupt everything, And they place undue strain on my users.

They could at least give you the choice during the unskippable intro to not use these out of scope features. But they choose to bury it in a settings menu that they don’t tell you where to turn it off. You have to find it yourself.

And that’s the whole ethos of Plex nowadays. Introduce spam turn it on by default. Don’t give people an option to turn it off unless they search for it themselves.

Go too wide on the product scope and disappoint their paying customers again and again.

Hyperbole much? As far as I can recall there’s been one unskippable splash screen in months. And how exactly is discussions "interrupting everything?

I’ve had a few elderly family members contact me about the splash screen asking what to do, both how to get past it and also how to get out of this ā€˜chat thing’..

Plex does tend to assume a lot with the way they roll out these ā€˜new features’.

In my country, there is also an issue with legal aspects of introducing social media to certain age groups, let alone with the way Plex enabled the setting by default

Did you really need clarification on this? ā€œinterrupting everythingā€ as in, interrupting everything the app has to offer until I press confirm button three times to tell the plex app I saw the ad.

Yes, everything about Plex is completely interrupted in the iOS app until you confirm the ad.

You cannot close the app and try to skip it. You must completely experience the 4-part ad to continue to use the app.

This is obviously unfair capture. You can unsubscribe from a mailing list, but they can do in-app popups you MUST process. This is a tax on everyone, and it scales.

It’s just seething enshittification.

Oh no, that must have been awful for you. I didn’t realise it was as awful as having to swipe 3 times and press ok. And then never having to do it again.

I’m sorry for the terrible impact that must have been on your life…

Have to agree.

I thought Plex had learnt their lesson from earlier attempts at forcing social media aspects on Plex customers. Apparently not.

I am more concerned with the legal aspects of what they have done but the cumbersome way they forced it on customers is hardly customer focussed. It is bascially blunt tool over the head stuff.

I regularly defend Plex where I see the customer value in what they add, to the point of being labelled a troll by some members of this community.

However, this situation is not one where they (Plex) have a defence in my opinion.

Just like any other company does it.

They send an email to the customer.

The customer can choose to ignore/read/delete that message.

A social media option should not be opt out.

You moved the goalposts from semantics and now to minimization. You getting tired of licking the bottom of an enshittified corporate boot?

How wild it is to see someone spending their free time defending ads

I really didn’t. The first post was hyperbole, the follow up was the same. I just decided to match the energy.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing about spending free time whining about an app notifying you of a new feature

As I mentioned in another thread, a Plex employee openly inferred Plex is a SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM.

In Australia at least, ā€œopt-inā€ is the general standard for data collection and sensitive information under the Privacy Act. For social media use, however, whether you use opt-in or opt-out depends on the specific context. Under 16 years of age banned. Age verification using a government approved identification is required, by law. What Plex requires is insufficent (verify over 18 by ticking a box).

I spent time in Europe professionally years ago, and legally, you also had to strictly adhere to opt out and opt in regulations. I am not sure what the current status is.

Note, I am not a lawyer, just a Plex customer that has read material provided by local organisations on the topic. I can not confirm the accuracy of my comments.

Below is the quote from a Plex employee (Community Manager & Manager, Customer Success) inferring that Plex IS a social media platform (we all know it is, especially with this new ā€˜feature’.)

Edit - added quote for context

Have you filed your official complaint with the authorities on this matter?

I don’t need to.

Edit - FYI. I have no users under 18 accessing my server so this becomes a discussion point only but you can of course file if you have concerns about your situation.

Hopefully Plex clarifies the situation.

Seems to me, the best ā€œsocialā€ feature, Watch Together, was removed but then we get Discussions instead.

Not my idea of social priorities.
