Turn off Discover Together

How do I turn this off? I DONT Want people knowing what I watch and I DONT want to know what they watch. I don’t want this information collected and I DON’T want plex doing this. I hate this on every level. Please tell me I can turn it and the collection of my data that this requires off?

You can disable discover features from the discover settings. Links to the Discover and Profile docs with instructions and other info can be found here. Use app.plex.tv to make sure all options are available as the web app built into server via local IP is not the latest.

Shouldn’t it be disabled by default? Why not have the people (nobody) that asked for this “feature” have to turn it on???

I hate this feature.

I’ve removed all my “friends” from Plex, but I still see their “activity” all over my screens, across all platforms. I’ve restarted my server and all apps, but I can’t get rid of it.

Is there really no way to file a proper support request?

Found the switch to turn off friend activity in the “Online Media Sources” tab in settings. Which … I guess?

that’s not how features work in software, that’s why. It’s easier to get someone who is complaining about something to turn it off than a user that doesn’t know something exists to find it.

I am still not sure the “hate” on this feature. I am not using it, but I didn’t disable it, it’s not harming anyone and I can absolutely see the benefit of it. Now, if my friends would actually use real names so I know who the heck each person is I would probably use it more.

Agreed. When milestone payments are on the line forcing out a MVP, every user gets the pleasure of being forced to turn off a feature that user never asked for.

It is strange how it’s an “opt out” not an “opt in” and that the “Account Visibility” is set to “Anyone” by default while also being tucked away in settings.

Novice users, children or the elderly may not even realize what the pop-up is on your client device. They skip right past it enabling yours or their status to be set to Friends of Friends or Anybody.

After it’s enabled from the client you can’t change it from there or even view your status

You now have to search for it in two different spots inside the UI on a computer. (if you’ve even realized this was a thing) One of which I didn’t even know existed until someone posted the link here yesterday

Privacy settings should be under your account settings, not buried 3 pages deep under “Edit profile”
https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/profile/edit

The “report issue” feature is also something that cannot be turned off. Messages sent between you and your users are stored at Plex and can’t be deleted by the sender or recipient

When I use something like Whatsapp messages are encrypted end to end. They are not stored on their servers and I can delete them off the device for myself or both parties any time I want

Please don’t tell me that Facebook cares more about my privacy rights than Plex does

On TV clients you can change privacy settings when on the Discover source in the menu on the upper right by the clock.
On mobile clients open profile by clicking on avatar in the side bar and Edit Profile button to see privacy options

It gets tiring telling my ageing Aunts and Uncles over the phone how to disable data sharing features pushed by Plex.

When there are so many ongoing issues with client apps that remain unresolved, seeing these Discover features pushed out does get under my skin.

I have discover turned off at the server level and I don’t appear to have any settings menu up by the clock on HTPC.

Before I found the settings to disable them on the computer yesterday, I couldn’t find them if they were there

It is here. I will pass along feedback that it is hard to find.

Can you also forward that it’d be simpler to just have a “Privacy Settings” page with everything on it, including ALL the privacy-related options for “Discover”, in the same menu that has the link for “Account Settings”?

Will do.

hmm, on the app on my shield trying to navigate to the profile just goes back to the home screen… (v10.3.0.4638)

Select Username from top left → View My Profile

Result: Just goes back to the Home screen

It would have been nice to see some feature parity with AndroidTV instead of this…for example supporting custom previews like is available for other platforms… Or how about fixing the random freezes/reboot required that occurs when actually using the product if you are on AndroidTV and try to look at actors etc…doesn’t happen right away but always happens.

This feature should have popped up as it did and asked you if you wanted to opt in not just assume that you want to share. Even after you say don’t share with anyone; it still provides an activity report for your friends that clicked through it. Seems odd to me. Who thought this feature was a good idea?

I have all of this disabled/private, but how do I turn off the “Activity By” section that is visible right under the play button? I cannot find a way to remove this from the interface in Plex HTPC. I have all online media sources disabled so not sure what else I need to disable to have this removed?

At the very bottom of this page. DISPLAY ACTIVITY FROM MY FRIENDS ON DETAIL PAGES

Thanks for this direct link - made turning off this unwanted feature simple.

Still can’t imagine why this should ever default to opt-out. Then again, MVP milestone payments are probably at stake.
