Is it possible to display some metadata (like the Title) during video playback?
It depends on the client. Which one(s) are you using?
I am casting from my Windows 10 computer using PLEX and Chrome.
Of the devices and apps in my immediate Plexiverse:
RARflix for Roku has always displayed a detailed HUD. Bit rate/Episode-Movie Name/resolution/audio type/stream info (transcoding/direct play/direct stream) with a single OK Button press superimposed on video in progress. Genius.
The New Plex app on Roku does display the episode/movie name - digging around (pausing the stream) will provide some other fragmented info.
The New Plex app on FireTV offers a poster image - pretty, but not very informative. If ‘Information Overlay’ is activated resolution and stream info (direct play/transcoding and the reason for transcoding). Other more detailed information conspicuous in it’s absence.
The Plexweb app displays the Episode-Movie name.
I can’t speak for anything else.

What is the destination device?
A Chromecast 2.
I’m casting Home Movies, and all I see is the File name before the movie starts playing.
The CC is not designed to be a full client so it displays minimal information. If you would like to see more data on the screen, you could make a feature request and see how others feel about it.
