Dissable Video Transcoding - Live TV exception

The dissable videot transcoding option is great, and I have it enabeled to prevent my users who dont need transcoding in the first place from accidentaly enabeling it, as 4K transcodes hogs to much resources from my nas.

Now however, I find myself needing the feature for me and my managed users, as I have enabeled live tv / dvr, and as it turns out, transcoding is all of a sudden required with more of my clients.

Please, either set an exception for owner and managed users to the disable transcoding rule, or an exception to live TV, since the live TV feature seem to demand transcoding being turned on for it to work properly on several clients.

And btw, I posted this topic elswhere by mistake and cant delete that post. It was always intended to be a feature request.

Tag your 4K movies with a 4K tag and then disallow that 4K tag for your remote users. You could also put your 4K movies in a separate library and then don’t share it with your remote users. Another option is to make optimized versions of the 4K movies so that the optimized version is played/transcoded rather than the 4K version.

That is just horrible advise. Why on earth would I wanna do any of that? Did you not even bother to read any more than the headline?

  • I want my users to be able to stream 4K content
  • None of them need to transcode but some do by mistake
  • Plex clients sometimes revert to 3 mbps 720p remote streaming when updated
  • PGS subbs dont play nice with Samsung. If a user doesnt know, he/she will not search for SRT to omit transcoding

There are several reasons for why a transcode may be triggered and I simply want to prevent that from happening except when I or my managed users watch Live TV. Preventing my users from seing 4K content all together or converting my entire library to a lower quality none of my users really need really isnt an option.

The suggestion for the optimized version was only to stop the transcoding. Plex would play the lower resolution should there be a bandwidth limitation otherwise it would play the 4K.

Unfortunately there is no option currently in Plex to do what you want, I believe there are feature requests for this. Now there is an option where you could use Tautulli with the kill script. Then you can setup triggers such as to kill the stream where the 4K stream is being transcoded and send a message to the user why it was killed.

Yea the kill script is an option
