Distortion, crackles, pops with both plex/plexamp on android Moto g stylus 5G 2022 phone

I’m having difficulty with music playback with plex/plexamp on my phone. There are constant crackles & pops when I try to play music through either of the plex apps. So far, no setting I’ve changed has improved the distortion. After some searching, this thread seems to be most similar to what I’m experiencing, but nothing in the thread resolved my issues. The only thing that fixes the playback is a third party app, RootlessJamesDSP, that has to be running while plex plays, but it doesn’t work with plexamp and I’d prefer not to have it at all.

  • At first, I thought this was an issue with my headphones, so I switched to wired, which didn’t solve the issue.
  • Then I realized that plexamp exists as a standalone app and I installed that, with no improvement.
  • I disabled dolby atmos
  • I disabled battery optimization for the plex/plexamp apps
  • It occurs with music downloaded to the device as well as streamed music.
  • Emby, pandora, & youtube all have no problems with playback, the distortion is only with the plex apps
  • The audio interface in plexamp is set to AAudio, but when I try OpenSL ES, there is no improvement

Let me know if there is more information I can add to zero in on the solution.

*** new information since original post: I used my headphones on my wife’s pixel 7 pro and I don’t get the distortion, so this seems to be a problem with plex’s interaction with my Moto g stylus 5g phone

hopefully that narrows down the issue for someone? I’m happy to upload whatever would help solve this issue.

**** Just took an old phone, Moto X4, out of the drawer and installed plexamp on it, no distortion. My strategy will now be to essentially use this old phone as an mp3 player. Hopefully eventually someone will come along with an idea how to get Plex/Plexamp to play nice with my Moto G stylus 5G 2022
