I am using my desktop PC as my media server and DVR. My machine pretty much stays running 24/7, but not logged onto my Windows account. I have the Plex media server set to start on login, but will the DVR record if I am not logged into my account? I noticed that I can’t access my server using the Plex channel on my Roku unless I log on and start the media player. I may someday get a dedicated media server, but can’t afford that now.
Thanks
You would have to be logged into the computer for Plex to be running. I lock my computer when not using it with the keyboard shortcut Win+L. Of course if Windows reboots for updates or anything like that then I must login again before Plex will start again for any recordings. I know others have used a program to run Plex as a service but I haven’t found it to be a big enough deal for me to worry about.
I have my Windows 10 PC set to automatically log me in. All it does is Plex and I live alone, so my security concerns are lax.
It would be nice if Plex Server could run as a service. I run mine in a headless server and while I just have one user auto login, having it as a service would be nice.
The answer is Yes but if you use the following the answer is No . . .
You just can’t use the update from within the front end . . . not that I ever did that anyways - I have always just downloaded and run the installer.
But when you do need to do an update you need to stop Plex and then update and then start it again.
It’s worked great for me - I am usually logged into the server as that’s where I like to do all of the scheduling and stuff but there have been times where I just booted it and let it sit and it’s worked great as a service.
