Do I really need Transcoding?

Hello,

I have a QNAP TS-451+. I watch movies on my QNAP which also acts as my Plex server. The movies are in .mkv format.

I noticed that Plex is always transcoding the movies as they play as you can see below:

Mem: 16042188K used, 288568K free, 47696118K shrd, 612476K buff, 11307548K cached
Load average: 2.87, 3.28, 3.55 (State: S=sleeping R=running, W=waiting)

I have Direct Play and Direct Stream enabled within Plex. I DO NOT want to burden my QNAP with this if it’s not needed. The server CPU constantly is pegged upwards of 89% usage or greater.

I only stream to my Samsung TV.

  1. Can I simply disable Transcoding on Plex?

  2. Should I disable Direct Play or Direct Stream?

I ask these questions because I want to remove the jitters and pausing of movie playback and I feel like the Transcoding tying up the CPU is the root of the problem.

Thanks

Which Samsung TV?
DLNA or App?
MediaInfo of the file? Just need the audio/video types, bitrates, and profile used

It’s more than just one file, so giving the specs on one file is not going to do you any good.

I have 4 Samsung TV’s that have the same issue.

My question was not to analyze one file and tell me it’s the file, I can do that already myself. The files are only affected when playing on any of my TV’s which are all different models.

My question is more so surrounding if I need Transcoding or not in general for watching movies.

Transcoding happens when the media you are playing can not be DirectPlayed on the device you are using.

The only way around this is to use an device that can DirectPlay anything or convert your media to a format that all your devices can DirectPlay

What hthighway said is exactly why I’m asking… plex looks up profiles based on what your client is to figure out how to play the file.

If you’re using DLNA it gets messy as sometimes it can’t figure it out or uses a default but it’s an easy fix… just edit the profile if you know the TV can handle it

The app I think has a spot you can tell it to use different profiles… at least on android it does… never used Samsung one myself

So… back to my original questions
DLNA? App?
Some example media info of something that doesn’t play?

Not using DLNA. No sure what app you’re talking about other than Plex.

So based on what HtHighway mentioned, I can simply turn off transcoding completely on Plex and see if my videos play fine without it.

Which Plex app are you using? Orca’s or Plex’s?

Do you have the client(s) setup to play “Original” file?

If you want additional help pick one TV to start with to make it easier for everyone to follow the thread. If possible start with your “best” Samsung TV. Chances are good that once the problem is found it may apply to them all anyway.

I’m either using the Plex app directly on my Samsung TV or on my Amazon Fire TV device.

Local Quality - Original
Remote Quality - 20 Mbps
Online Quality - Original

But as I type this I realize the Video Frame Rate on this particular movie was 24p. Would this then force transcoding if a remote person (outside of my home) was watching this movie? Can the assumption be made that if I was watching this at home (Local) it would not transcode?

The Samsung model is a UN55H6203.

Frame rate shouldn’t trigger a transcode
I’m seeing several complaints in the forums about <2016 Samsung TVs suddenly always transcode since 1.3.x

That file for sure should play direct… could you provide logs from an play attempt?
Narrow down what Plex is doing and why it thinks that file can’t be played native

I will grab some logs from the Plex server a little later this morning here and send them along.

Sort of where I was going with my thoughts on this and why I asked.

Which Plex app are you using? Orca’s or Plex’s?

Please give me an idea of what “Orca” is and if that’s something I can install on my Plex TV? This is the first time I have heard of that.

Thanks

Newer Samsung TVs (2016 and up) will use the Plex App made my Plex which is available through the Samsung apps store.

Older TV’s will use the Plex app made by a forum user named Orca, it will be the only Plex app you see in the Samsung app store if you have an older TV

Does your Plex App look like this image?

If so then you are using the Plex app made by Plex, not Orca

And based on your previous POST, where you indicate your TV model is UN55H6203, you have a 2014 model which is using Orca’s app

…and the support forum for that particular app is here:

My app pretty much looks like that besides the background color being more yellow then anything else.

Then it would seem you are using the app made by Plex for Samsung TV (2016 and up)
If that is the case see this link for what media formats will DIRECTPLAY on your TV

Is there a way to simply disable transcoding completely on my QNAP Plex app so that no transcoding occurs?

No there isn’t, and if it was disabled then anything that gets transcoded now would just not play on the device you’re currently using. Otherwise, if it could DIRECTPLAY, it would.

Thanks.

I was going to get some logs, but with remote play now after changing “remote quality” to “original” the remote movie I was testing with is not transcoding. Then I had that remote person who has access to my library try another movie and it’s still not transcoding as of yet.

So still just waiting to see if I get the same problem as I mentioned in the beginning of this thread, then upload logs, unless someone needs them now.
