Does AMD Ryzen 5 3400G can transcode 4K Hevc 265 10bit (50Mbps+) to 1080P(20Mbps)

I am confusing that if I only buy a cpu Ryzen5 3400G without video card, only using APU to transcode 4k Hevc 265 10bit to 1080P, is it possible?
I already buy Plex Pass , and read https://support.plex.tv/articles/115002178853-using-hardware-accelerated-streaming/?_ga=2.7335344.344290991.1583760765-2097201130.1583203953, but I feel the article is simple, not contain AMD, but AMD is better and better in these 2 years. Could some skill master can help me? thanks in advance.

AMD CPUs are not supported for hardware transcoding.

but I check another guy already transcode successfully, even just on H.264. and I check the info https://bluesky23.yukishigure.com/en/dxvac/deviceInfo/decoder_amd.html, it seems Radeon Vega 11 Graphics can en/decode. really confusing on it.

Not with Plex.

could Plex support team to make AMD APU Transcoding (HW) in the new version? AMD 4000 series will release this month. and its APU is more and more powerful, and will be popular. AMD yes. lots of ppl need this function(HW transcoding) on AMD cpu with APU. so Plex team pls do some work. thanks in advance

I have not heard any commitment from Engineering about adding AMD support.

I know they want to do it but have no other input on it.
Previously, we were to hear in Q1 of this year.

Technically Plex support VAAPI encoding and decoding - and the 3400G’s Vega11 should support VAAPI if you’re using relatively new drivers (Hell, might even be in the stable MESA / AMDGPU)

It does require installing VAAPI related plumbing tho, and passing through the /dev/dri stuff - but that’s similar to how it’s done for Intel (Since it’s the same API)

So, yeah…

Technically Plex supports the Intel Quick Sync Video facet through the vaapi.

Engineering has not committed to supporting AMD CPUs / GPUs yet.

The MESA libraries and AMD hardware libraries are non-existent.

thank you. i will not buy AMD 3400G to build HTPC or NAS

thanks, and the AMD is better during these years. just want to try. but lots of soft do not support its CPU.

I agree AMD has gotten a LOT better. The new Ryzen chips are tearing into Intel, who has been lazy and laid off a lot of their engineers .

@65986974_qq_com honestly, i’d go with the 3400G anyway - if you’re using Linux you might have to wait for a bit for the VAAPI plumbing to be there - but it shouldn’t be too difficult seeing as it’s natively supported in FFMpeg.

If you’re gonna be running Windows (or Hackintosh with an extra AMD GPU?) on it, it should all just work out of the box

cool, thanks for telling me. yes, I prepare use ESXI , passthrough the AMD 3400g APU. okay. I will buy 3400G and try it.Intel 10th DT cpu will release in April, but still 14nm, …I just want to say, AMD ,yes. haha.

FYI, HW accelerated transcoding works perfectly with AMD GPU over VAAPI on Linux.

There is nothing to wait for, I have been using it with other servers for some time now.

Its just Plex that does not support it.

When selecting AMD HW, make sure the APU/GPU supports not only HEVC, but also MAIN 10 profile for 10 bit HEVC.

Hello everyone, being a rookie i read through all the comments and had a question about a build i am thinking for my plex server and the media is on a NAS and dont want any kind of compromise on streaming files 720p upto 2160p. Also have the capability of transferring files from SFTP server to my NAS with no lags and with the best speeds even while streaming.

I see tha ryzen 5 3400g doesnt support 4k or hardware transcoding as it doesnt meet the benchmark is there a way to add a video card to meet all the requirements and make it full. And all hardware transcoding features are met according to the sheet. Posting the build screenshot and NAS screenshot

There is no support for hardware transcoding with any AMD CPUs or Graphics Cards at this time.

Adding support for it is on Engineering’s wish-list of things to do. When that might be is unknown.

Currently, Intel QSV (the CPUs ASIC) and Nvidia GPUs are supported.

Does this answer your question? ( I maintain the NAS Compatibility Guide)

hello there, so u have seen my list out there, so adding a Nvidia GPU will help with the amd ryzen 5 3400g for 4k content? I am just building the first one so trying to understand whats best. Or no matter what i do, does my NAS support the same related to 4k??

If the Nvidia card, using the Nvidia drivers, on a QNAP, will help.

I do not know if it is possible to use an Nvidia card in a Synology NAS.
I have not been asked to add Nvidia support to Synology NAS systems.

no i meant nvidia card my desktop setup. I dont think i am making any changes to NAS. All i was looking at was the desktop build if it can do hardware transcoding if selected for 4k and 2160p files.

I think you have different questions?

  1. What hardware transcoding can the Ryzen CPU support?
  2. What hardware transcoding does a Synology NAS support? (You added a screenshot)

First:

  • There is no hardware transcoding support for AMD CPU or AMD GPU cards at this time.
  • Intel QSV (Quick Sync Video) and Nvidia cards only.

Second:

  • The Synology NAS model support is based on: Intel CPU without external GPU.
  • We are considering adding more information to the NAS Compatibility Guide.

While not clear what you’re asking:

If you add an Nvidia GPU card to your Ryzen system, with the Nvidia drivers, Plex will see the Nvidia and use it.
