I have a Plex Media server and with some movies/television shows barely being watched, I would like to move them to a DVD to regain space. They are in MP4 format. What I would like to know is if I connect a DVD player to my media server can I access the DVD through the media library? Thx!
No, Plex doesn’t support removable media.
Plus, it is cheaper to get an additional 4 TB hard drive than burning the equivalent storage capacity to DVD.
(And much less annoying.)
You can even use USB flash drives with a little help from RMB utilities or filter driver hacks. It’d be alot simpler than DVD burning.
So what you’re saying (I think) is Plex Media server will support a external USB drive?
Absolutely. I’ve used one multiple times.
Yes, it does that, but:
It is not designed to handle it, that you then go and switch this external drive eventually with a 3rd drive back-and-forth.
All drives should be left connected all the time.
To avoid further trouble in the future, assign each external drive a fixed drive letter:
if your just trying to copy all your files to dvd and always have that dvd in the drive and available as a “read only” drive that would work fine (a little slower due to dvd drive spin up and such but, you can use a dvd drive as another storage media, I would suggest a different route if possible using usb drive or even iso thats mounted and mapped to a drive letter would get you better performance but I understand your short on physical disk space. Maybe external USB hard disk would be cheap alternative for you.
One more thing: When possible, I also try to disable idle spin-down.
