I have played a movie encoded in 4K (HEVC Main 10 HDR) as identified by the PMS on a Plex player running on a Sony OLED TV 65A90J which runs Google TV platform. It denoted 4K, HDR and direct play on the playback. However I found the color is duller and dimmer when compared to playback of a 4K HDR Bluray disc of the same movie played from PlayStation 5 and is shown on the same TV. Enabling subtitle or not does not change the result. The Plex version looks like converted to SDR before showing on screen.
Is it expected? Or is it a bug? Is HDR output (not HDR decode) supported?
I have tried the Plex Player on PS5 to play the same movie file again. The colors and highlights of the playback was in between the Bluray played on PS5 and the Plex Player on running on the Sony TV.
I have tried the Media Player came with the Sony 65A90J to play the same 4K (HEVC Main 10 HDR) file through the DLNA interface provided by PMS. The colors and the dynamic range seems to match the Blu-ray disc played in 4K HDR10.
I think it means
The file was encoded contains HDR information matching the Blu-ray disc.
The built-in player can reproduce the HDR content on the Google TV OS of the TV.
The Plex client running on the TV cannot reproduce the HDR content faithfully.
The Plex client running on the PS5 is capable of reproduce the HDR content closer to the Blu-ray quality.
