That’s great news! Now just waiting on “eventually”.

Right? Who knows how long that “eventually” will be. I’m hoping it isn’t when Scorpio arrives at the end of next year.
This is good news, hopefully it does come through within a reasonable timeframe
Its here…I hope Plex can take advantage of this !

We just had an Xbox One OS Update - Anyone know if 3rd party apps can now take advantage? I am still figuring out how to best set up my Xbox, my receiver etc.

Even after the 3rd party apps are enabled for it, we would need to wait for an app update otherwise the audio will still transcode before hitting the xbox.
Can anyone confirm that the recent update actually affects sources outside of the blu ray app? I’m fairly certain the update was just for the blu ray app. It does work well for playing blu rays, but I can’t find anything else that passes through the audio without using the system audio settings. There is still a “Dolby Atmos” option in the system audio settings that hasn’t been enabled yet. I hoped that it would’ve been implemented before the creator’s update was rolled out, but Microsoft still hasn’t enabled the option. It’s there, but it doesn’t do anything. And since there’s a Dolby Atmos option and not a passthrough option, it seems the best we’ll get when it is enabled is basically just forcing the audio to get output as Dolby Atmos rather than Dolby Digital or DTS.

Pretty sure the only thing that has changed audio wise so far is for blu-ray
Small update. I have the beta (ring 3) updates enabled on my Xbox. For a while it showed in the audio settings the Dolby Atmos option, when enabling it it sent you to install a Dolby Acces app, that was not available yet.
However, since a few days the app is there and I can now enabe Dolby Atmos system wide (not just for Blu ray). the proof of this is the Dolby Acces app itself, it has some sample video’s and it actually enables and shows Dolby Atmos on my home theatre.
So if the Dolby Acces app, a third party can support Atmos, then I bet the smart people of Plex will be able to add this support now aswell!
@sandernl I don’t know if I’d be so sure of that. If Microsoft is linking the app to be installed from their Setting application. This is probably either first party or something that was worked on specifically between Microsoft and Dolby and may still be using libraries the normal 3rd party applications do not have access to yet.
Yeah I understand what you are saying, but what is the point of adding this option outside of the Blu-ray app now if none other then a demo app can use it?
Even if the support is there not right now today (using beta software) i think it will be added shortly, so apps and games can have dolby sound. When Microsoft announced Atmos support last year they never said it was specificly for blu-ray and even described the advantage it can have for games.
I agree that it is coming, Microsoft has even said it is. I’m just saying the appearance of that app does not necessary signify that it is here yet.
It’s not just the app, its the OS setting, you can now set it to Atmos, you could not do that before.
Wow, this is great news! I tested it out last night and while it only works on the Dolby Demo app at the moment, it appears to be doing something similar to an HDMI passthrough. It would be nice to get some third party apps enabled with Dolby Atmos so we could really test this out.
Actually if you set the output to Atmos, all the movies played in Plex will output Atmos now, just not true Atmos. Must be some internal transcode done by the XBOX.
@“Wenjun YU” Which receiver do you have? it doesn’t appear to work that way for me with a Denon x6300h. The Dolby test videos show up as Atmos on my Denon receiver, but not when I play videos in Plex.

I use the Samsung HWK950 soundbar. The blue lights will be lit if it detects ATMOS signal.
The normal function of the Xbox sound setting option is for the Xbox to convert all audio to that format before outputting to the connected device.

That’s kind of what I assumed it would do. And it appears it’s working that way for @“Wenjun YU” , but it’s not working that way on my Denon receiver. It’s acting more like an HDMI passthrough for me. Frankly I’d prefer a passthrough since the receiver can already create faux Atmos on it’s own.
I have a Denon 2200w and when not using the Dolby Access app, I only get PCM as the source from the Xbox and on the receive itself, it just shows “Surround” as the audio format. I am only able to get ATMOS to show up when using the Dolby Access app. Also, I have noticed that now I no longer have DTS Neural X as a possible upmixing codec and it only shows “Dolby Surround” as the only option besides Stereo and Multi Ch Stereo. Enabling this passthrough option seems to limit the options that my receiver can provide to upmix the audio. When I try to play a movie with Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio source, it will only output 5.1 from the Xbox to my receiver. It seems like at the moment, its better for me to set the audio output of the xbox to bitstream as Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS so that my receiver can provide more sound options (ex. is that if I set the xbox to Dolby Digital 5.1, I get options to do Dolby Digital + Dolby Surround or Dolby Digital + DTS Neural X on my receiver).
