Dolby Atmos Coming to Xbox One

Please add HDR support at the same time.

Anyone from Plex that can comment on this? They added Atmos support when the SHIELD supported it, so they can do the same now right?

PS: In addition to the Dolby Acces and Blu-ray app support was now also announced for Gears of War 4 and Crackdown 3.

I would really like an update to this question as well - as I’ve had the same experience with bitstream and Dobly Atmos not being available as a decoding option on my Denon X4300.

This will come when MS makes the API available to 3rd party app developers.

The Netflix app now supports it, does this not indicate the API is available to 3rd party app developers?

Not sure if it has been made available to Plex yet.

Let’s be honest, with no sign of a pulse from the Devs it doesn’t really matter anyway

This is good news and I imagine it’s getting closer and closer for plex. Thank you for this news.

Dolby Atmos support on my Xbox One S Plex app is a big desire for me. Thanks!

I have the Dolby Atmos app installed on my One S and Plex does appear to use it, the difference is that my Onkyo defaults to “All Channel” using Plex with the Samsung TV app, and proper Surround/Atmos with the One S, the difference is that the rear speakers are much quieter with the One S, and (appear to be) full volume with the Samsung TV app.

I also would like to see the dolby atmos feature in plex, however, on the xbox one s it is also not possible to stream true hd, dts-hd etc, so hopefully this will all come in once?

Atmos is not dependent on true HD. Atmos is about positioning, TrueHD is about lossless. Atmos is working on Xbox One S and PC in app.

Hello, Thanks for your reply. if i play a bluray with Atmos on the xbox one S my receiver (Denon X2400H) displays “Atmos”, but this is not the case if i use the Plex app. So is there any setting i need to adjust in Plex to make sure Atmos is working? I did download some MKV files with Dolby Atmos implemented, but i can only choose dolby surround if my Xbox is set with Atmos bitstream. With other bitstreams (DTS or Dolby), i can choose Dolby digital & Dolby Surround or DTS Neural X.

Ok. So first of all it is the question if Plex is transcoding or not. You can see that on plex web app status page. It should say Direct Play. Plex clients do not do transcoding but they possibly can do muxing of demuxed streams. You can see that on the status page.
Now on Plex Client you need to enabled direct stream and direct play. This is done in Plex on Xbox one settings. Below
I have launched Xbox streaming and Status page to demonstrate the scenario. This is Shattered Dolby Atmos in EAC3 demo in MKV container from official page.
When this is done and you see Direct Play on Plex for specific video, then it means playback should be done by OS itself. The question is Xbox One S OS - Denon connection and settings.

Now on Xbox One S there is an option for Dolby Atmos for Home Theather. I cannot test this one as my receiver does not support Atmos. Option on Xbox One S looks like that:

If receiver does not support it then when selected error is presented.

Here is the screenshot from Dolby Access app which is basically a license to use Atmos.

Just keep in mind that output stream may differ from source. For example if you use TrueHD in MKV, Plex will probably transcode it. If you use even Direct Played file, OS may transcode it. For example reduce number of channels, do other processing. For example add background music, Xbox live voice chat, system sounds, Cortana etc. So when testing also check number of channels that receiver actually receives.

Dolby Access app contains demo files with Atmos so you should use them first, then proceed with Plex.

Thanks a lot for your explanation!! I checked all the steps, actually all the settings are correct. I also did test the demo files with Atmos, it works properly, my receiver displays “atmos”. Also with Netflix it displays “Atmos” while playing the 2 Atmos movies. Although Plex is still a different story, it does not display “Atmos”, but the 2 atmos speakers seems to work so i suppose this is just the way it works when using Plex, the sound is great but not as great as Blurays.
Thanks anyway for your help in this!!

Great to hear that. So to summarize for others, what we have figured out is that:

  1. OS supports Atmos and properly interacts with receiver. (Thanks for confirmation)
  2. Plex app can Direct Play Atmos streams though it does not recognize it. (I have submitted feature request to Plex)
  3. Plex web browser app in Edge cannot Direct Play Atmos streams though it should as Atmos streams are supported in Edge browser. (I have submitted bug request to Plex)
  4. We also confirmed that Atmos is available to apps as Netflix can stream Atmos streams. (Thanks for confirmation)

Have a nice weekend!

Hoping someone here can help me.

I have Dolby Atmos working on my XBox One S and showing as such on my Samsung Atmos soundbar. However My Plex Server (Current Version 1.8.1.4139 on Synology NAS) is transcoding all Atmos tracks.

All setting on the xbox have been correctly changed to permit Atmos (bitstream, Dolby Atmos for Home Theatre options checked) and settings within the plex app confirm Direct Play And Direct Stream are enabled.

Dxhelios’ point 2 above states that although the Plex app does not recognize the ATMOS stream, the app can direct play.

However, my server is transcoding all ATMOS tracks - with the Plex Web Manager (within the status section) showing that the server is “transcoding TRUEHD to AAC” [note the video stream is direct played]. This is the case for all my movies with ATMOS.

For information purposes the following is an extract of the media info for these ATMOS movies common across all my MKV rips of the original Bluray:
_ID : 2
Format : TrueHD
Format profile : TrueHD+Atmos / TrueHD
Codec ID : A_TRUEHD
Duration : 1 h 58 min
Bit rate mode : Variable
Bit rate : 4 219 kb/s
Maximum bit rate : 6 912 kb/s
Channel(s) : Object Based / 8 channels
Channel positions : Object Based / Front: L C R, Side: L R, Back: L R, LFE
Sampling rate : / 48.0 kHz
Frame rate : 1 200.000 FPS (40 spf)
Compression mode : Lossless
Stream size : 3.49 GiB (26%)
Title : English TrueHD Atmos
Language : English
Default : Yes
Forced : No
_
So, could someone/anyone please help and advise on how I can get the plex app on my Xbox One S to direct play ATMOS.

Thanks.
