i got me a sony a85 from 2020 with eARC, that supports dolby atmos, im using an optimized eARC HDMI cable. and a sonos theater setup with their new arc
im trying to watch a movie with truehd over plex but my server keeps down transcode to EAC3 (i know it’s DD+) but i’d like to get the full atmos working.
For Atmos, Netflix/Amazon/Apple/etc stream Dolby Digital Plus + Atmos, aka “Lossy Atmos” or “Streaming Atmos,” not TrueHD + Atmos. The audio is stored that way on their servers. They do not transcode it on the fly.
Could Plex transcode TrueHD + Atmos to DDP + Atmos in real time? I’ve no idea. I’ve no idea the computational requirements to do so. It might not be feasible for systems used by most Plex users. Also, even if it was technologically possible, the economics might not work. Dolby probably wants a boatload of money to licensing the technology. Those fees probably do not fit within Plex’s current financial structure.
