Double Episodes - The Office Season 3

I know this has been asked several times here on the forums, but I’ve tried all of the suggestions I could find and can’t get Plex the correctly list the 3rd season of The Office. Attached is the filelist and in the background you can see how it’s messed up the ordering.

Any ideas?

First, go to the episodes and check the path listed (Info).

If everything is ok (only one path listed), then somewhere higher up in the list of directories/folders you have something cross linked -OR- you have that Season misidentified and coming up as this.

To check further, while looking at the Info, click ‘View XML’ and see where it’s pointing.

What I can tell is you have too many episodes. Season 3 only has 23 episodes, not 25.

1 Gay Witch Hunt 2006-09-21
2 The Convention 2006-09-28
3 The Coup 2006-10-05
4 Grief Counseling 2006-10-12
5 Initiation 2006-10-19
6 Diwali 2006-11-02
7 Branch Closing 2006-11-09
8 The Merger 2006-11-16
9 The Convict 2006-11-30
10 A Benihana Christmas 2006-12-14
11 Back from Vacation 2007-01-04
12 Traveling Salesmen 2007-01-11
13 The Return 2007-01-18
14 Ben Franklin 2007-02-01
15 Phyllis’ Wedding 2007-02-08
16 Business School 2007-02-15
17 Cocktails 2007-02-22
18 The Negotiation 2007-04-05
19 Safety Training 2007-04-12
20 Product Recall 2007-04-26
21 Women’s Appreciation 2007-05-03
22 Beach Games 2007-05-10
23 The Job 2007-05-17

You should have no stacked episodes. Other than Traveling Salesmen and The Return because you have two different episodes in one file.

Those are your files. Plex tried to work with what you gave it. The error is not Plex’s. If you placed too many files there or have something else in that season, I suggest you play the episode and determine what Episodes 24 and 25 are. The TVDB shows 23 episodes but you have 25 files.

Your episode files are not correctly named. http://thetvdb.com/?tab=series&id=73244&lid=7

You must use either Episode based or Date based naming. The Office (US) is Season based.

https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200220687-Naming-Series-Season-Based-TV-Shows

The correct file name for Episode 1 should be: The Office (US) - S03E01 - Gay Witch Hunt.mkv

Don’t you mean the folder should be labeled The Office (US)

I was using this episode list: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Office_(U.S._season_3) which would explain why my numbers were off.

I’ll adjust (and add the (US)) and see what it does from there. Thanks!

The full structure should be:

The Office (US)/
  Season 3/
    The Office (US) - S03E01 - Gay Witch Hunt.mkv

There is still the error of 25 files versus 23 official episodes. Episode files 24 and 25 do not belong as part of the US series.

FWIW, here is my Season 3 file list for The Office. Works like a charm.

Just a little FYI. Plex does not use Wikipedia for any content. Nor do most online databases such as thetvdb.
Also, the file names are not as important as the initial folder structure. As long as the files have a coherent and accurate numbering system, you should be fine.

Might work but it’s unsupported. You shouldn’t advertise that as it’s the wrong naming convention.

Not true. The naming my not be listed on the FAQ or HowTo but it is correct and it is supported. The ONLY thing required for the naming to be correct is the numbering. If that is correct then all will work.

I use yet another naming convention. The key point is

Name{delimiter}SxxExx{delimiter}optional_title.extension

Star Trek Voyager.S07E23.Homestead.mkv works. Strongly Suggested is to use - (with spaces) instead of .

Do you know what the definition of supported is? Just because it works does not mean it is supported. You’re ignoring the point I am making. If it deviates from the naming convention, it can cause issues which is why there is a “supported” convention.

But it doesn’t deviate from the naming convention. Each file has the season# and episode#. That’s all you need.

I’ve seen this a lot. Many people seem to think the entire show is somehow tied to the title name of the episodes. They are not.

Plex does not base entire series on a single episode name or a collection of episode names. The series is based solely on the folder name it finds.
Plex does not base episodes on the title wording. The episodes is solely based on the numbering you give them(s01e01, 01x01, Season-01xEpisode-01, etc…).

Take this for example…

\Cheers (1982)\Season 01\He said he was not there yesterday; however, many people saw him there - 01x01 - Some Title Name.avi

\Cheers (1982)\Season 01\I am never at home on Sundays - Season-01xEpisode-02 - Some Title Name.avi

\Cheers (1982)\Season 01\I checked to make sure that he was still alive - Season01xEpisode03 - Some Title Name.avi

\Cheers (1982)\Season 01\It didn’t and they don’t recommend anyone else do it either - s01e04.avi

\Cheers (1982)\Season 01`s01e05` - It was getting dark, and we weren’t there yet - Some Title Name.avi

\Cheers (1982)\Season 01\Malls are great places to shop; I can find everything I need under one roof - s01e06 - Some Title Name.avi

\Cheers (1982)\Season 01\Rock music approaches at high velocity - s01e07 - Some Title Name.avi

\Cheers (1982)\Season 01\The mysterious diary records the voice - s01e08 - Some Title Name.avi

\Cheers (1982)\Season 01\The old apple revels in its authority - s01e09 - Some Title Name.avi

\Cheers (1982)\Season 01\The sky is clear; the stars are twinkling - s01e10 - Some Title Name.avi

\Cheers (1982)\Season 01\We have never been to Asia, nor have we visited Africa - s01e11 - Some Title Name.avi

\Cheers (1982)\Season 01\We need to rent a room for our party - s01e12 - Title. We need no stinking title.avi

Of course, the issue the OP was having was incorrect numbering of the episodes. He actually has the correct number of files(assuming Traveling Salesmen and The Return are two episodes)

It does deviate from the naming .

Please see https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200220687-Naming-Series-Season-Based-TV-Shows

Scroll down to Grey’s Anatomy.

The Series name must be part of the file name.

And that is exactly what @ryanborstelmann included. So it does not deviate.

I refer to this:

“\Cheers (1982)\Season 01\Rock music approaches at high velocity - s01e07 - Some Title Name.avi”
“\Cheers (1982)\Season 01\The old apple revels in its authority - s01e09 - Some Title Name.avi”

This is the deviation I speak to. The episode’s "Series name’ is not The old apple revels in its authority
