I’ve recently tried to start using the newer player for Windows (Plex for Windows) again after having many issues with it when it first launched. It has gotten better, but there are still bugs I can’t get away from.
One of the bigger issues I’m having is double subtitles, which is very annoying.
From time to time Plex for Windows will display both the internal SRT subtitles and the external SRT subtitles simultaneously. I’ve had this problem with Plex for Windows before, which is one of the main reasons I went back to Plex Media Player for the past years. Plex Media Player has never had this issue even once.
I’ve now also recently reinstalled both my Plex Media Server and Plex for Windows client and started from scratch, but the issue is still there. When reinstalling I removed all the leftover files from the old install before reinstalling (AppData\Plex\etc), including all 1Windows registry entries.
The issue looks like this:
The internal SRT subtitles are shown at the top of the screen (which are SDH subtitles, as you can see from the “MAY:” part), and the external SRT subtitles are shown at the bottom of the screen (just like they normally are).
As you can see, the SRT External are selected, just like I want.
Switching to Subtitles = None or Subtitles = [Internal] SRT will remove the external SRT subtitles at the bottom, and still show the internal SRT subtitles at the top.
Closing the playback and restarting it will make no difference. You must close the client completely and start it up again, and then it will start showing the correct subtitles again (only the external SRTs). For a while at least, until the problem comes back again, which is about once a day or more.
If I start playing a different video before restarting the client, that video will work fine (and only display the external SRTs). But going back to the video that has issues with the subtitles again will still show the internal SRTs even if they are disabled, until I restart the client.
As you can see here, it is a Direct Play of both video and audio, so no transcoding (transcoding is actually turned off completely). And as you can see, the server tells me the client has selected the SRT External subtitles, but it is still showing the internal SRTs.
The “Automatically select audio and subtitle tracks” has no effect on this, I’ve tried all combinations of settings with the same result. And if I understand correctly this only affects the default selection anyway..? This includes both the settings under Account and under Languages.
Any ideas?
