Download entire library or playlist in Plexamp

Whoa, that’s a lot of emotion there. I don’t expect wordings like arrogant morons to motivate Plex folks to work on this.
Instead, what is hopefully going to help is to vote for this feature request. The button’s at the top of the thread, next to the headline. Tap it and wait, alas that’s all we can do (except cancelling Plex Pass).

Hi, I can understand Braunyar’s “emotions”, it’s something really amazing and beyond comprehension… Please, remove this restriction as soon as possible!

I completely agree that this is a poor restriction, but there’s a way to express it, which is politely and with respect. No-one deserves to be spoken to like that

I am 100% for the elimination of download limits. I think it should be up to the user to decide how much storage they want to allocate to music. I have multiple curated playlists that average nearly 48 hours each, and would like to be able to download ALL of them in their entirety so that there is no question that my music will keep playing. Relying on the cache only goes so far - for instance - if I have a spotty connection and want to completely switch up what I’m listening to I’m out of luck. It takes a decent connection to reallocate the cache to the new selections, which leaves me frustrated more often than it should.

I’m seeing that this suggestion has 61 votes at present. I don’t know if that number has increased of late or not, but it seems like that should be enough. Any chance this feature is in the works?

Seriously this limit is absurd.

I have a 512GB phone, and PlexAmp won’t let me download my entire library to it, which means I have to go back to syncing with itunes again (which means installing Windows and itunes).

Just get rid of the limit.

So why not give us an option to download ‘all albums’?

I don’t want to listen to playlists, but I do want access to all my albums?

Adding my +1 to this thread! This is the biggest missing feature for me as someone primarily using Plex for music.

To me, the primary benefit of Plex is having all of my music stored on a device-agnostic server and no longer needing to import and configure my entire library every time I get a new device. Being able to stream music directly from the server is awesome when I have wi-fi coverage, but unfortunately I don’t always have that (ex: at work). So, I’d really like to be able to take the next step and sync my library from Plex to my individual devices for offline listening, making Plex not just a server for streaming but the sole source of truth for my media library.

I understand that I can technically do this now, but downloading all 25k songs in my library individually is tedious, as is having to remember to download all new music that I’ve added to my library. A toggle within Plexamp or the main Plex app that enables keeping the device’s local storage up to date with the server library automatically would be fantastic.

Let me chime in here real quick.

My understanding of the 24 hour limitation is that it was a multifaceted product and engineering trade-off. The two key reasons were:

  1. The simplicity of the current system results in a robust, pretty much bulletproof download system. On the other hand, it doesn’t scale up to very large libraries well. The limit is there to avoid performance issues and potential breakage.

  2. From a product angle, Plexamp is designed to work best hand-in-hand with the smarts of the server. All the radios, mixes, sonic similarity, advanced metadata, smart shuffle etc. that make Plexamp such a great, unique player require server features that would be near-impossible to implement for locally downloaded media.

Given the above design goals of a simple, robust, unique music player, a fancier and inherently more complex download system was considered out of scope for the initial release of Plexamp.

That said, Plexamp’s developers have heard the community’s feedback, and have said a few times in the past that the download system is something they’re interested in revisiting for a future release.

Given that it would involve a significant rethink of how downloads currently operate, it will take time to get right, and unfortunately isn’t as simple as just “removing the restriction”.

I hope I’ve provided some clarity here, and allayed any fears that we’re not listening to feedback

Thanks for this note. It’s great to know that the issue of download limits is being examined and that it may one day be a thing of the past.

Hey, I’m with most people here in support of full library downloading being an option. Something that’d be great to see is a stronger tie-in between the Home/Library tabs, and the Downloads tab- for example, while offline, music isn’t available solely in the Downloads tab, but rather in the whole app (like more mainstream streaming apps).
The online functionality of the app is absolutely brilliant, but more robust offline would be great for us folks who spend a lot of time away from signal.

Adding my vote to this too. I knew the limit existed for playlists, so I had manually downloaded all the albums I wanted on my phone one by one. I noticed today that a Collection can be added to downloads and it didn’t seem to have the same 24 hour limit, so I reinstalled and added my Mobile collection, but this is also limited, just silently. D’oh! My fault really, should have checked how much of the collection downloaded before deleting everything, but I thought this limit had been lifted. I totally get its complicated to implement for a complete library as some get way too big, but would it be possible to bump it from 1 day to say 7 maybe? Otherwise thank you for all the incredible work you do.

I can totally comprehend the complexity of the app juggling between local files on a smartphone and the cloud and not cratering. That being said, I sure do hope I can eventually delete all other music apps on my phone accessing the 128 gigs of tunes that I have to use when off the grid (Which is often in the mountains). I also have a very big dream… that the knowledge being gained with the Discover Beta tying all the video streaming services can be harnessed to pull songs from Spotify and other subscription services without having to utilize their crap-apps. Here’s to the future!

Push.
Would be awesome to have one Software/App for everything.
ESPECIALLY syncing EVERYTHING locally. I want to chose everytime everywhere to which of my items I want to listen to.

Or alternatively just add a better/easier navigation view/mode within the regular Plex-Software.
I do not want/need/use radios, blends, AI/Smart-Stuff and whatever features, I just want to have my music available locally and synced automatically when I am back home.

This “feature request” now has 89 votes. Where does that put it on the list of priorities? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Count my vote here for this as well!

I’d also like to add a way to “view” those downloaded Playlists. Instead of a single Playlist in Downloads, have Plexamp display that as sorted by Album or Artist, etc. I play my content via Albums, but downloading Albums on Plexamp is a no go because there are times when I don’t need an entire Album, but Plexamp only allows a full album download unless it’s in a Playlist. Long story short, I’d love to have a “Phone Tunes” Playlist, download it, no matter how long it was and sort by Album in the Downloads tab.

Also…an icon or some kind of indicator in the main Library view whether an item IS downloaded so we’d know that without always having to tap over to the Downloads section.

Not just download the entire library, but integrate it better with the rest of the player! Basically just sync across devices really. None of this nonsense where downloads are a separate section, if you have the same song in multiple playlists you download it twice, it’s not really easy to navigate etc. Just a little icon in your normal library that shows if it’s downloaded or not, and the option to download!
