PlexAmp full Offline controls and support

Where does PlexAmp store it’s offline files? I sync my normal Plex files to an SD Card and want to do the same with PlexAmp.

Additionally, how can I sync my entire music library and play only from that? I have a horrible signal at work and cannot stream. Even when I click on my downloaded content it looks like PlexAmp is still pulling from my server.

Changing offline storage path hasn’t been implemented.

You can setup playlists with all music, or use certain smart filters to reduce playlist size, and then download that playlist. Please note however, for performance reasons, Plexamp limits per-playlist downloads to 24 hrs of total duration (~350 items usually). There have been discussions to raise this a bit, but I don’t think ‘entire library download’ is what Plexamp is designed to do.

Which client are you using? I don’t think it’s possible for downloaded content to use an ‘online version’. Do you mean it is showing in ‘now playing’ on the server?

Previously I was using the Plex Android client and had all of my music synced to the phone.

Yes, I see it in the Now Playing section of the server. If I’m connected to my wifi it shows Local. If I’m on cell it shows Indirect.

Plexamp looks like a pretty good replacement for Madsonic in my usecases. However the offline file handling should be slightly changed to enable good mobile usage. Subsonic caches a set amount previously played music automatically. I would like plexamp to do this too. ie. maintain an automatic rolling offline cache 16GB of previously listened music and prefetch a few tracks on a playing playlist automatically too. It’s very rare I’d like to bother my personal time on what I would need to download offline on my phone. Data transfer cost or phone storage space are not issues. However gapless playback on a livestream on a train is.

Plexamp already does this as well. Settings - Advanced - Caching

Ok. Excellent. Then can I request a setting for a larger cache than 16GB? I have a phone with 256GB storage and Flac files in my library. Maybe a dynamic setting based on available storage?

I use Plex mostly for Music, and I’m excited about PlexAmp which seems great so far. But the offline limits are a big blocker for me. I have my entire music library (17k tracks) synced to my phone so that I can play any song when on the road or on the plane (well, that won’t happen for a while…). The Plex app does a good job of automatically syncing new tracks added to synced playlist.

Hopefully this is something that will be added soon. PlexAmp Interface and music features are so much better than the standard Plex app.

Offline access in general is just terrible. My family needs this as wife and kids don’t have dataplans and used to sync the music offline. This is vital for acceptance and the WAF. Also browsing media by artist, song and album etc.

What’s not working in regards to offline access?

Browsing is coming. What is wrong with the current offline syncing? You can sync albums, playlists, radios, mixes, etc. Could you be a bit more specific on why offline access is terrible? Thank you.

Why not let the user decide the limit of the downloaded playlists rather than limiting it to 24hrs? It does not make sens in my opinion.

I’d love to see improvements so it would continue to work offline for extended periods. I do a lot of BC highway driving where there isn’t cellular for hours and the cost of cellular data would make streaming for days at a time moot anyway.

  1. cache the data so I can still browse content instead of being presented with an unable to connect error
  2. ability to fully download or sync the library instead of downloading album by album or 24hr for a playlist at maximum
  3. a option to restrict stations to downloaded / synced music only

I download something then disconnected wifi and LTE. I see it in the list but get the wheel of death when trying to play it. It just doesnt ever play it. Its a good v1 - a good start. Interate and make improvements and hopefully I dont have to buy my wife an ipod or iphone - arg.

Plex did need a good music player.

Since we are on the topic of offline support :

If I download a playlist with 2 musics (a and b), then download another playlist with 3 musics (a, b and c), both playlist will be downloaded separately. In other words, I will have downloaded music a and b twice, since they are in both playlist.
This is a waste of space and bandwidth.

And like others in this thread, I do think that being able to get our whole music library offline would be great.

Those points (plus the inability to browse our music) are the only drawbacks I found for now.
If the 2 offline points are solved, this would instantly become my (and other members of my plex home) default music player.

Did you verify that these tracks are indeed downloaded twice? e.g. by comparing the used storage space for the Plexamp app, before and after downloading the second playlist?

I forgot to mention, I’m using Plexamp for android.
Yes, the tracks are downloaded twice.
I made 2 playlists, (playlist 1 and playlist 2).
Every musics in playlist 1 is contained in playlist 2.
I made a screenshot of the storage used after downloading playlist 2 and before downloading playlist 1.
Then, I downloaded playlist 1 and took another screenshot.
As you can see, it is downloaded and taking space.
Lastly, I took a screenshot of Plexamp. It does say that 3.5Go is stored (1.6Go from playlist 1 + 1.9 Go from playlist 2).
I would have expected it to only download 1.9Go since every musics from playlist 1 is in playlist 2.

Totally agree! Love the app, great interface and audio quality! When there is a way to “download all” I will 100% move all my music out of iTunes, that software has become a disgrace to use on windows, takes forever to load a library with only ~1300 songs… total crap! Plex handles my movies and TV shows quite well, and I have added some music to test there & I like what’s there so far… just need to be able to have it all on my phone the way iTunes syncs now and I’ll be set, and probably ditch my iPhone! :sunglasses::+1:t3:

Can also confirm this behaviour on Plexamp for me. Downloaded a few albums and then went on to download a custom mix which contained only songs from those albums already downloaded and the songs were downloaded for a second time. This is on my Android device. Agree that SD card support would be a good addition in the future. Also some sort of caching that allows the main page to work in some capacity instead of just saying no network would also be stellar.

This should already be supported, no?
