Downloads ignoring “Prefer downloaded content” setting

Server Version#: 1.24.5.5173
Player Version#: 8.25.1.28704

Basically the same issue as New downloads ignoring "Prefer Downloaded Content" setting. Looks like I’m less than a day late to bump that issue.

I have Prefer downloaded content enabled but the only place that it plays the downloaded copy of the files is when it’s initiated from the Downloads menu option. Everywhere else it streams from the server.

Can follow the same steps as above to get it to happen or you can make sure an item is downloaded, go to a library, start playing, check the Playback Info and see that it is not Direct Play (On this device).

Otherwise feature seems to be working well. Love no more transcoding to download.

Thanks!

That issue was for the iOS app and was fixed. I’m not aware of this issue appearing on Android. Please reproduce and provide me the Android log. I’m not able to reproduce myself. For me, the Downloaded version is played.

Oh interesting. I was running into the same issue when I saw that bug report that I thought it was a general issue.

I’ve attached the log.

  • Went to the Downloads Section
  • 06:42:39 - I play Seinfeld - S1 E1. Looks like it grabs data from 127.0.0.1 which is expected.
  • Go back out to the Home dashboard.
  • 06:43:08 - I play Seinfeld - S1 E1. It grabs it from my Plex server at 192.168.0.189

plex.log (128.4 KB)

Let me know if you need more logs

Edit:
So looking more into the logs, it looks like it is playing the local file, but when I look at the Playback Info it tells me it’s DirectPlay (MY_SERVER) not Direct Play (On this device). Guess it’s just a visual bug with that menu then.

It’s possible that it’s a display bug. Did you check the server dashboard to see what that showed?

Ok, it looks like there 2 small bugs. The app is still going through the logic of asking your server for the file but then overrides that with the local copy. The display is likely from the initial request so it thinks it is streaming from the server.

I’ll investigate this some more and see about getting it fixed. Thanks for the report.

When I initiate play from the Home dashboard (or library)

  • Shows in the sever dashboard
    • Lists the streams but not if it’s Direct Playing or Streaming (Tautulli says it’s Direct Play)
    • No bandwidth indication (Tautulli shows 0 kbps)
  • Doesn’t show my sidecar subtitle (srt) although the dashboard and playback info says it is

From the Downloads section

  • Doesn’t show in server dashboard at all
  • Shows sidecar subtitles perfectly

Okay sounds good. Let me know if I can help.

Thanks!
