DS1520+ Transcoding Drive

I’m looking to replace my Windows Plex Server with a Synology DS1520+. Can I insert an SSD into one of the drive bays to use for the transcoding folder or is that a waste of a drive bay? In my Windows machine I’m currently transcoding on a Ramdrive.

Thanx!

A RAMdrive has its benefits – transcoding on a SSD won’t give you much of a benefit. It’s true that they’re faster in file transactions, however you’ll need a lot of parallel streams (or maybe 4K transcoding) to get beyond the HDD’s capacity to cover that.

So leaving it as it’s default in Synology won’t be an issue then?

It shouldn’t.

Good to know. Thanx!
