i have a synology NAS DS418 and wondering if i need to do anything to make it run more smoother… it seem it eating up alot of CPU and i thought this was good for a plex server. but it keeps freezing and ref refreshing. every few seconds. show i get a different NAS like the DS418play or something? i mean i just bought this so i can return it.

NAS aren’t usually super strong when it comes to streaming high-quality media that requires transcoding in order to play on a client (e.g. if the client cannot deal with the raw original file).

From the Plex NAS compatibility matrix I can see that the DS418 will be able to transcode videos up to 720p HD quality and some 1080p content (e.g. depending on bandwidth, codec…). Plex cannot use the NAS’ iGPU for hw-accelerated transcoding. The DS418play has the same processor – so you won’t get different results from that (j and play models tend to be a bit weaker than the “regular” models).

Your basic options are:

  • avoid transcoding by using clients that can deal with the media in its current format
  • get a more powerful server (could be a micro PC or Shield that’ll use the DS418 for storage)

so i ran a test and it seem that i am able to stream my phone, TV, Tablet and FireTV. but on PC it struggles with buffing and lags. i have tried using a NUC with a NAS connection but it seem it keeps crashing the plex server. nothing else is running on the NUC and its an i7 with 32GB ram.

I take it you refer to playing your media from a browser on your PC?
If so… try using Plex Media Player or Plex for Windows instead

i have an Intel NUC (i7-6770, 32GB RAM) Win-10 PC. i installed plex server on it. i then mapped a network drive (NAS) to the NUC. i set up my Plex server on PC that points to the network drive. added all my media and able to play movies from win10 (plex) pulling my media from NAS (network drive) the issue i have is some media does not play and keeps crashing the plex server. i have to re start plex multiple times and stop playing the media and choose another. so now i use the NAS (DS418) as my plex server and only see issue playing media on PC, but all other devices (TV, Phone and tablets) work fine.

Going to need DEBUG (not VERBOSE) log files ZIP which captures this happening.

It’s not possible to determine the root cause, or proceed with resolution, without them.
